I have a dog that will find and bay a hog but after a short time will quit and come check in with me. Any suggestions on how to break this bad habit?

I'm having similar problems with my bluetick, she will find her own and bay her head off but the pigs here like to run and when one takes off on her she always seems to quit it or lose it in the thick brush. That or she will get too excited and confuse herself if she comes up on more than one.

Sounds like the dog don't know he should Finnish the job. Put with a dog that won't stop few times might straighten up

Have you actually caught any hogs in front of just that dog right by itself?

How old is the dog?

He is 1.5 and I have caught quite a few hogs where he was the lead strike dog. He has a great nose and bays well but tried to catch a 200 pounder last year and got cut pretty bad. I think that has something to do with it but looking to help train him to stay with the hogs he finds.

U might try puttin him in a bay pen with a soft hog. Let him get comfortable sharing space with a hog. Talk to him and encourage him. If he don't fire off, put a dog in with him that will bay and not catch. Then let him see the hog get caught.bput him up and do it again a week or so later. Pet him up real good after each session.  I don't like to spend much time in the bay pen BUT it sounds like it might help this particular dog. You can only do your part. The rest is up to him.

Maybe he wasn't baying when he was with other dogs like you think he was, he might've been striking the hogs and making the race but when it came time to bay he just wasn't into it as much as you thought he was, my reason for saying this is because a friend of mine had a pup about the same age as yours, he would roll out jump a hog and make the race with the best of him, several times when he was by himself he would just lose the hog, got to watching him on the garmin and he would be at every bay but would just be making loops around the entire bay, so we put him in a wooded baypen and he did the same thing, we was able to get up there and see what he was doing, we put him on deer after that, his problem was he didn't like to bay by himself, he would get in the action when the CD got there and had been cut a time or two but nothing to hinder him, but his entire life he had been started with other dogs, had been put in the woods pen with other dogs, always been dumped in a race already going and always been casted with other dogs, after that learning curve, we'll take each pup when they get to around 10-12 months and put them in a square baypen with a decent hog, and if they won't just sit down and bay right by themselves then they're no longer hog hunted. Not at all saying this is the case with your dog, just giving you an experience I've had a lot of dealings with and changed the way I see and do things with my dogs.

Goose87...that pup that went round and round at the bays sounds like a stock dog windmilling...

Golfdog...sounds like you already have some good suggestions...something else to consider...

A pup at the tree can be ruined by aggressive dogs at the tree who are greedy about the prey...they can really chew a pup up...same thing can happen at the bay especially if the hog is caught or wore down...an aggressive dog can cause a major set back for a pup...

I would like to think that but he was half kemmer, a quarter plot an a quarter cur, no stock breeding in him, he just was wired to want to run, after that I pay close to attention to pups when I'm hunting, a lot of times if a man has a dog that he catches hogs with when there's other dogs present he thinks he has something, but when it's needed to do it by itself they scratch their noggin trying to figure out why so&so won't do it now when he was doing it with other dogs. After dealing with that it's opened my eyes to a lot of things and made me really put an eye on a dogs ability to be able to do it right by itself, but that's just my opinion, and your right an aggressive dog will ruin a pup quicker that being banged up will.

Great suggestions! My dog actually bays better by himself. I have caught a good number with him and he does pretty well in a bay pen. It's more of an issue when I'm hunting with other dogs.

My buddy has a walker that will find a hog all day long and run it but soon as it stops or if he finds it and it doesn't run he will bark 5-6 times and leave hog if other dogs are there he will stay and bay it's kinda agrivating cause he doesn't sound off enough to get other dogs there for help

Staying based ALONE is what separates the dogs from the "hogs dogs" in many situations.  Many won't admit it but a lot of guys hunt dogs all their life that need company to get the job done.   Hunt the dog alone and see what you have.  Truth is you can try every trick in the book but often times it is what it is.  Good luck

It could just be a puppy thing as in the dog comes out from the bay to tell you look what I found and is looking for praise if he is finding hogs I would just fine him a partner that will stick with him and Bay strong he might learn how to stick with a bay or he might just be a good tracking dog and he'll put the rest of you Bay dogs on pigs

One that don't stay bayed for any reason after a very few times is a cull. He is functional if you have something else that will go with him and stay bayed.

Get a dog that will stay right by his side and I'm sure if there's another dog with him he want come out. Now the next hog you bay with him, kill the hog no matter what it is, stick the hog, bring you dog over and pretty him and talk to him good. If you stick the hog right in the throat then Their will be a little stream of blood coming out, while you petting him gently rub him down with the hog blood start at his head and rub him down good all the way to his front shoulders.

Wow is right, if he was my dog I would cull him but obviously this fellow don't so I have him some advice that I heard had worked before.

Well I'v been known to make a horse's behind out of myself on these sites but that's some advice I would have just kept to myself.  Lol
