EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Went and hunted with a friend Chad in Ms. We dropped two Plotts Flash and Mindy in some fresh sign about 6:45 and they trailed off and got jumped. They separated and this friend of ours saw a good boar cross the road with Flash about a 100 yards behind him. We scooped up Mindy when we had the chance cause we were going in a area where the dogs were hard to stay with. Flash ran 8 1/4 miles and came up bayed. Chads friend Saw a big hog come out of there crossing where it had crossed before. We went in to Flash and he had a group bayed up. As luck would have it, when we turned the bulldog loose a hog crossed right on front of it and he ran that hog a few hundred yards before Chad toned him in. The hogs had broke and Flash was headed to posted property on a hog and I toned him in. We went back and put on the big hog that had crossed about 45 minutes before. Clyde took him on out of there and we found him bayed a couple miles away. We went in a nasty thicket a cut the bulldog loose and with our usual luck the hog broke before the bulldog got there. I packed in a yr. old Plott Hank and he ran that hog for quite a ways and lost it in fresh burned area. I turned Amber loose and she trailed it across the burn and the race was on again. After a while Chad dumped two of his dogs in the race and those dogs were singing. Finally about 12:00 they bayed him. Chad s friend Scott had showed up by then and we went in and caught a nice 200# boar. This hog changed a couple of Zip codes by the time we caught him. Bad luck for Chad s gyp as this hog severed the back tendon on his good Plott gyp Mindy. This was a great effort by several dogs to get this hog caught. He tried the old trick of throwing Flash off on other hogs and that would have worked of Chads friend had not seen him cross out of there.

Seems like the good ones always make u pay some kind of price...   I got a chance to hunt with some of ur dogs last weekend with my buddy Joe.  Very impressed with the bottom and drive that they had .. and they were only young dogs..

They've been wide open for us around the house. Sounds like some mighty fine dog work. Good job.

Awesome story Cajun. Man I see some of you guys talk about running a single boar hog like this and I'd love to be on a hunt like that sometime. Around me you run out of country to fast and there too many fences and not enough gates to get ahead of a hog and dump fresh dogs on him.

His ear fell off

Sharp eye Bowtech. We went in without a breakstick  & my friends catchdog has a bite you just cannot pull him off or choke him off. He will die on that ear & after a few minutes  of trying to break him off, we simply cut his ear off.

  Slim, That was the reason I had to tone Flash off of that group. He was headed for posted property.

Great dog work! Is that 8 1/4 miles from point A to point B or 8 1/4 miles of track from strike to bay?
Friend and I had dogs bay a little over 3 miles from where the dogs hit sign a few weeks back and I've seen plenty of other times where dogs put over 20 miles on their collar from "track to tree" but only bayed a mile or two away. I've never had one get that far out of pocket directionally though! Hats off to them plotts!

T Bob, That was 8 1/4 miles that Flash ran him before the boar threw him off on a bunch of sows. If Freddie had not seen the boar cross out of there he would have got away. It was 45 minutes later that we were able to put back on him where he crossed. He crossed earlier in the same spot with Flash & Mindy on him. I had just reset the Alfa when we had turned loose that morning. I had not reset it with the earlier dogs but Clyde ran him a little over 2 miles before he bayed & then broke. Just speculation on my part but that hog probaly ran a good 25 miles that morning.

I was only asking about linear distance because ive always wondered how come some hogs will do miles and miles and miles inside a given area (lets say 2 sq miles) and others will run directionally. I think the furthest ive seen directionally was around 4 miles.  not being challenging just curious, no disrespect intended

I would say it was probably about 4 miles at the widest point from say A to B but he sure made a lot of loops inbetween.

Feb 12 we ran one 6.80 miles from where we dropped to where he bayed at. Granted he didnt circle or loop alot that i could tell. Lost signal at about 2.5 miles. Definitely surpassed my expectations.

It's crazy when they run 4 or 5 miles straight away... then loop back and bay right where you started them.
