Only one 6 yr old male, cur x hound left. He will find and run own.hog. Can run semi open sometimes but not a rattle head. Fast and gritty. Range varies from med/ short to long. Has some bottom to.him.as.well. I think he just needs to get into a pack he can lead and he should become more consistent like the others. I have a pit x beagle that was dumped off last year at camp and she will roll with him or hunt on.her own. I will let them go for 1000.00. Beagle mix is free. I just let her go with us and she hates hogs and will help catch any size hog with another dog. 125lbs or less is caught with these 2.

My yard is mostly Joe blood now and they are a pleasure to turn loose but a pain to try and call off or catch to go home. Great looking pups and please keep us updated on their progress.

The blue dog blood that is Watchdog these days is Grapevine and TNT blood. They are the only blue dogs I would own if I was to get one. I got a buddy who has them and they are basically game bred built dogs that are blue and plenty of drive for catch work. I have been told that the TNT dogs are based off of Gr. Ch. Art blood. Google River Ridge Kennels or inbox me for his contact info. I think he is planning on a litter out of proven catch dog stock soon.

I'm looking to breed my little red Mt. Cur in exchange for 1/2 of the litter. Will help pay for puppies as well. This little dog is pretty much a silent dog, but can get mouthy when one breaks until he loses sight of it, but it doesn't matter because he is really fast. He will hunt deep (3/4 to a mile deep usually) and wide by himself and covers a lot of ground quickly. Great bottom too. I am wanting to breed to preferably a Mt. Cur but will consider any breed as long as it is a hard hunter, fast and has some sense between its ears. I have had some great dogs but this one is special for sure. You and I are definitely on same page Waylon and Rueben you are correct. I went through the mid 90's on a few unproductive hunts and all the folks I was with could talk about was hounds being a key to getting a jump at all. Same way when I started back around 99-00. Few and far between but when we got in them anything was a victory except the old man who usually led the hunts he had catahoulas and he had worked hogs all his life and he didn't like it all if they grabbed a piglet. (That man is Odis Weems and shortly after taking me on several hunts he quit the woods all together and went to the bay pen strictly because pseudorabies wiped his old woods dog stock out and we were bringing ABs, Curs x with hounds, hounds, Pit x Curs, etc. and he refused to hunt with them dogs on his hogs)  Later I started hunting with some good yellow blood ( probably not 100% but they look like BMCs and hunt like they are on fire. They are all fairly rough when it comes to a single hog but they get into a sounder they will bunch them up, circle and bay like a stock dog should. They are smart and the blood with worked well on both cattle and hogs. They seem to have the instinct to only get as rough as needed to get the job done, but of course that comes only with experience in most cases. There are some that are flat out just rough or not at all, but the consistent medium is definitely there and like I say the only complaint I have heard on their hunting is they have too much range, too much bottom and are hard to catch of they are not ready to go, which the last part can be fixed

We use the term hog hunting, but actually the folks who use cur dogs are not using a hunting dog, but a stock dog. When you use them to find hogs they are actually working loose/ feral livestock do there should not be that predatory instinct of hunt for the weak. Now of course you will have slip ups with pups but that should get worked out pretty quick. If you were using a pack of curs/ stock dogs on cows that got out and they kept catching out on the calves you would not be happy and that is how I feel about the hogs. I don'tind it every now and then but if they continue to do it after you have given a good effort to break them of it then they are culls even if you are killing the hogs that you catch. The reason curs make the best hog dogs is because hogs are livestock and it takes a stock dog to work them properly especially when you bay up a sounder. They should do nothing but circle and bark to hold them in place and do nothing to break them. If they do break they should stop the lead one and bunch them up again, not catch out on piglets and camp out with them while the rest of the herd gets away. If they do that then they aren't finished and could possibly be culls. That is just my opinion, but I believe a lot of cur dog men would agree with me 100%.

That is the exact method I told PLP to use to see if it would line them out after we hunted on Sunday.

Whats the super Bowl consist of in football.. the two BEST 2 teams competing for the ultimate prize, the Lombardi Trophy... and those best two teams ran the gauntlet of the elite teams that year in football by progressing through the playoffs.

The TDHA is a good hunt, for a good cause; but with only 4 or 5 hogs required for the weigh in these last few years, it opens the amount of people that can compete. Therefor are you really competing against the best of the best?? They also have less payout $$$ and buckles available due to less categories that you can win. Its bigger in my opinon because its been going longer being one of the initial hunting tournaments. This year the TDHA hurt themselves by seperating us as dog hunters with the whole barr issue

In my opinion the Randy Bumpurs is by far the super bowl of hog hunting. with 20 buckles, 8 paid out spots at over $15,000 in prize money it is uncomparable witht these other tournaments. The deciding factor for me is that they base their big pay out... $6k this year, on the heaviest stringer of 10 hogs, which seperates the men from the boys in hog hunting. its alot easier for people to catch a heavy stringer of 4 or 5 hogs vs 10. If you are looking to compete with the ELITE which I believe the words 'Super bowl" encompass, you should plan on hunting the Bumpurs next year

Nice Job Fellas!  It was a rough weekend on us but we enjoyed the heck out of it!

Congrats all of you that won! It was windy and tough to hear a thing for me and most everybody, but I had a blast and caught a couple of really nice boars, but not enough to win and dang dog ended up 8 miles away from where we turned out and I ended up getting lucky that Justin, Allen and Doug were over there and picked him up and brought him to me at the weigh in, which none of us made there on time either. Looking forward to it again next year!!!

That is the right thing to do Dodgegirl and I respect you for it.  Now if the Dogo became human aggressive I would have to put it down before I would let it go to a pet home.

I have run both for years and I prefer curs, but love a hound race. If you have equally matched dogs as far as track speed, bottom, etc. you will catch as many hogs but it will take you longer with the hounds. In my opinion if you have the speed on track, which hounds usually can maintain a faster track speed for longer periods, it doesn't matter how many times they bark as long as they are fast and accurate they will shut them down. If I had to choose one. I would take a fast silent cur over a hound hands down. If I had to go get a new pack of dogs to start over from scratch and didnt know anyone to lend me a sure enough hog dog while i trained the pups, I would go with a running walker or Cajun Black Magic Plotts, but I would work them real hard on running a hot track to work on their accuracy.

It's easy to do when it is the truth and that much fun! Just competing in a tournament like this one is fun, winning would be extroidinary! I didn't know Randy Bumpur's but by all accounts he was a Really Great Guy that was loved by all! Hate that I never got to meet him, because folks like he has been described are far and few between.
