a sure way to find out if the dog is a good hog dog but a one man dog is to take the old man along and let him cast the dog out...if he is a hog dog he will get out and hunt and find a hog if one is to be found...
if that is the case you will eventually have him hunting just as good...just treat the dog right and make friends with him first...
good dogs don't have bad days...maybe some days better than others...
