I have started some bmc pups that are about 10 months old. They know what they are supposed to be hunting for and are doing great in the pen. On my last hunt my dogs split and the male pup went off chasing his own hog. He trailed\chased it over 950 yrds before i lost communication with him on the gps. This is way farther than I want him going. Should I try to break him from going so far or should i wait till he gets older and see if he can stop the running hogs? And If I should try to break him from going so far how should I do it?

If the pup is goin that far on his own at 10 months, he will probably only get further with age. I understand that it may be land issues in that you want him to stay close, but you are trying to break the pup from doing what 95% of everybody on here is trying to get their pups to do.

I would suggest throwing that pup into the woods every chance you get to attempt and reach his full range of potential, or selling the dog and getting a line that is shorter range with less bottom. (You won't have to look far).

x2

Looks to me you have a good pup that most would want. If you want short range that catches pigs you will probably need a real catchy type strike dog and you will need a vest.

A dog that quits a hog is a cull in my book...

I've got a 3 year old male that is extremely close range I would trade for that pup. Naw I'm just kidding I wouldn't do that to anyone. He is pitiful. Let that pup role!!

I just can't see how you can train a dog to be short range and still catch a hog. More than likely the dog would be ruined if it were being trained to be a short range dog.

A hog nowadays will run and run. It ain't squirrel hunting that is for sure... Grin Smiley

Thanks for the advice. Before now I have only been around short to medium range running catch dogs that stop the hogs quick. I guess Ill just let him work it out and learn to stop them.

Or if you want to cull him I would be glad to take him for you.  Wink
