I have a redbone I have been hunting. When he hits a hot track or what I think is a hot track he will open up. Not real bad, he will throw out a couple of barks then be quite for about 20 seconds and throw out another two barks. Sometimes he will go in hard with the other dogs and will not make a sound. He hasnt struck any hogs so what I wanna know is what he will sound like when he is staring at one. In the pen he will have a longer drawn out bark, not a full bawl. Also he has gone in with his nose up and will stay quite. Will he only open when his nose is on the ground? All the other dogs are silent.

if hes a young dog i would say youl have to wait and see.dogs trail all different ways. some just boop ever once and a while some bawl some chop like there treed i hate those.

I'm not a hound expert, but I've hunted around them for about 10 years now and have owned my own for 5 years. I hunt with two that since birth were never exposed to open trailing dogs. Here's what's weird: my walker will do just what you're saying your redbone does on an old track. Kinda like he gets frustrated when he can't work it out. He'll bark a couple times and shut up. However, he does not open on a hot track. I've watched him wind a hog bedded up 400 yards out and never opened up till he was face to face. I've also watched him trail one that crossed the road with his nose down and he never opened. I think that the more you hunt your redbone, you'll figure him out because they are all different. Maybe try hunting him alone or in a large training pen so that you can watch him work it out. Good luck.

If you know what he sounds like looking at one in a pen then you already know what he will sound like looking at one in the woods.
Im no expert on hounds but the ones I have hunted barked real good at the same time their nose was skidding across the ground. The hotter the track the more frequent the barks.
