help with penicillian

How long can i give penicillian to my dog safely? The bottle says no more then 4 consecutive days. The cut happened monday and it was bad...She has a large flesh wound and she will not leave the staples in. ive already stapled her back up since the incident but she pulls them out the same night.i bought a collar for her neck but its already been 72 hours..Do i leave it open since she is licking it or try to reclose it and put the collar on? the wound is 1 1/2 inches wide and maybe 4 inches long infront of back leg were ther is constant movement. That could be why she keeps pulling the staples out i think.

I would go 7-10days for penC on a bad wound like that.

If the wound has not dried yet and is still clean then you can still close it up.  You may have to stitch itstead of staple so it can have more mobility in the cut.

Hydro therapy works wonders on open wounds!  It takes a little longer healing process, but the only way to close and "old" wound back up would be to cut away the dead skin and sew or staple it up.  I prefer just leaving the wound open (if it will not stay sutured)  and do hydro therapy.  By no means am I an expert, but have dealt with many nasty wounds that would not stay closed and had great results with hydro.  Just keep running water from a hose on the wound for at least 5 minutes straight twice a day if possible.  The wound will start to look white and soft which is what you want (promotes new skin growth)  Keep on the pen for a few days and try the hydro for a week, after each hydro I would put cut-n-heal (or something similar) on the wound.  Water works wonders.  Good luck

The only problem with that is it entered her stomach cavity..Not sure if she pulled the stitches out . Dont want to put water in there if she has opened it up its hard to tell because of the location and the way it was cut.

Justin you are right on with the Hydro therapy.  My vet reccomends 5-10min 2x a day or as long as I can stand and hold the hose....LOL

EXCEPT THIS:

If you are rinsing 2x a day there is NO need to put Cut-N-heal on a wound like that.   It needs the oxygen to promote regrowth as well and the cutnheal seals it off and makes it take longer.   

Cut-N-heal or granulex works wonders but should only be reserved for small cuts that dont require staples or PenC.

Without seeing the cut it is hard to say what I would do but I understand about the stomach and the hyrdo conflict.

Justin is also right about the dead skin he just said it better than I did.  As long as the wound is still fresh and doesnt have dried skin then you can restitch it.  If it has been longer then 2-3 days then I would leave it open and just try to keep it clean.   It will leave a bigger scare if it is not stitched but as long as it is kept clean and the dog is on anit-biotics he shouldnt get infected and heal back fine.

Alright i appreciate the help longshot and nt she is gonna be alright. Last night she finally went # 2 so im relieved. Couldnt tell if there was twist in there so now its just keeping her still long enough for the muscle tissue to grow back and shes keeping it clean so it should heal fine.

Ok gave her 7 days penicillian now started her on amoxicillian cause the wound is still wide open..What 2 weeks of amox? thats what the vet always gave me?

On my last vet trip to re-install some organs on Poco the vet perscribed me 3 weeks worth of cepholixin or K-flex.   He said to give for 2 weeks and the 3rd if needed.   So vets do reccomend anti-biotics of longer periods of time.   I think you would be fine doing what you mentioned.

I really appreciate the help everyone, shes doin really well.Kinda upset with me cause i wont let her out of the pen loose cause she wants to run and play with the other dogs. Will be a little time still before i let her run free. But atleast shes still with me she was my first hog dog. 3 years of huntin and not a cut but guess she did it up right when she got the first. gonna be a good size scar.

 just some thing i found that works well on an area that cant or wont stay closed Preperation h and anti biotic oniment mixed the preperation h draws the wound together works well also help if kept in the fridge makes it thick and gummy sticks better
