Looking to get a small tractor for around the house. I only have 2 acres. It would be used mainly to move dirt (box) and bushhog. The ol ball and chain gave me the green light on around 5k for a used one. With that being said what would you recommend in the horsepower aspect? And what brands to stay away from?

John deere, kubota, massey fergeson, ford 8-9n are all good brands n all but kubota, (not sure bout old kubtoas) will do just bout all u need on 2ac. Iv got 5ac n a 40hp 2012 kubota n its to small for what i need, n i use mine on what u described ur usage for. I wouldnt go less than 20hp

man I would save yourself a bunch of money and go with a ford 8-n tractor . heck I do all I need to do on 3 acres with a worn out old craftsman lawn mower .

I would look for tractors in the 30 horse plus range in any brand above including new holland,case, and international. If u go older tractors u can get bigger tractors. Another brand option is mahindra. A mahindra is a tractor made from the old IH patterns and molds.

I've owned six Kubota tractors since 1996.all of them 4x4 with loaders. I may be a bit biased, but the orange paint has servers well!
1996 B7100 18hp
1994 L2950 26hp
2010 GL3940 40hp
2012 M7040 70hp
2013 BX2660 26hp
2007 L3800 34hp
If I was in your shoes, I'd either opt for an old 8n with a five foot shredder and box blade, or search long and hard for an early to mid 90's 25-30hp kubota. The L2950 and L3800 are pretty basic stripped down models, but you'd be amazed at the work you can accomplish with a small 4x4 tractor with loader.
In 2007 or so I paid $6500 for my 1994 L2950, that had a 2005 model front end loader, box blade, land pride finish mower and a middle buster plow. I would think you can find a similar unit today in your price range.
Another good option is a Yanmar compact 4x4 tractor. They are tough and inexpensive.

What model new holland and what model kubota are yall running? And in what scenario Is the 55hp outperforming the 100hp?? Only one I can imagine is in plow work or some other earrhwork where you need heavy iron.... I've run some older fords like a 7710 that were pretty stout, but the newer new holland tractors I have run in the 70hp range didn't do much for me. Turning radius, steering, controls, and filter locations really left something to be desired. |

The New Holland is a tn 55 with front end loader and 4x4 am not sure about the kubota but it a 90 hp not a 100 and with loader and 4x4 it over heats alot ! We use them both do are hay pulling rakes cutter also on the kubota you can one get on and off on one side do to the Controls for the loader blocking the other side Performance wise thay both do there job ! But the new holland never seems to miss a lick for us

The New Hollands that I have used in recent years are the TN70 both cab, one 4x4 one 2wd, probably a similar unit to the TN55 you are running. If they are the same, keep an eye on the filter just behind the front axle on the passenger side, it's sitting out in the wide open, just waiting for a stick to stab it.
I agree on the Kubota, that it would be nice to get on and off both sides, but I gotta admit, that the ergonomics of the loader controls are about perfect, so I accept the limited passenger side access. I ended up putting a tool bag on just inside the passenger door, and that's were I keep some chains, tools, and extra pins and bolts. Only time I have run into higher temps have involved the radiator screen plugging up with seeds and debris from mowing in tall grass. I generally blow it off before the engine gets warm, because I can feel the AC blowing a bit warmer than usual, so I know to blow it out.

Where r yaws loader controls located on the kubotas? Iv got a 2012 kubota L3940 w/ 4x4 n a loader and i climb on on either side. Gotta get a lil skinny if in a hurry but i very very seldom bump the loader controls, plus there aint a step on the right side, which makes the first step a bit stretchy on the legs. Orher than the step not bein on the right side, i dont hav an issue with the loader lever in the way

Well this is the one I ended up with. Just couldnt pass up the deal. It's a 15hp with no problems at all. Picked it up for $1300 and put some fresh paint on her. Then drove a lil ways to get a used 4' bushhog for $250. Couldn't find a used 4'box blade so I had to get one new for $430 out the door  |
