Well had some buddies call and say some hogs were eating their deer corn etc. Small tract of land and full deer season here and lots of hunters around so I reluctantly agreed to head out last Saturday night and take a look they sent me a few trail cam pics and there was a decent boar on it couldn't tell how big cause of the distance and nothing to judge but good none the less. I brought strike/baydog Shag and my CD Petey. Shag is short range and winds well but won't beat down the woods unless he likes something he winds. Drop about 2am we make a little loop around the feeder they'd been hitting some sign but not anything fresh or good. Bout an hour or so and nothing so we call it and start heading back to the trucks well about halfway there Shag gets a little jumpy and starts acting piggy we go a little farther and he throws his head up and takes off opens a little around 380 or so we wait a few min and bam bayed solid at 580 across a field in a pine thicket. We head to him get 40yds and send Petey caught hog get there sow 140ish lbs throw her and stick her and take a pic look at the GPS and shag is 175 he opens a little and bam bayed solid again at 330yds start heading to him and hear him yip so know its a better hog than we just caught get 40yds again and hear the huffing and rushing of a good hog send Petey and Shag stopped barking for about 30 seconds so he went a little right of the bay soon as he barked again Petey was there...no squeal no grunt just thrashing and a whole lot of it. I was on my way as soon as we sent him and got there maybe 30secs to a min after he caught cause I couldn't get over a pile of cut timber left from the logging. When I got there I saw how big he actually was. Continued

I got around the brush and it was a opening about 10-15ft where the hog had beat down the brush etc. Got him legged and saw the damage that was done in that short period of time. Hog was 270+lbs I didn't get to weigh him because I was still at the vet when the other guys had beheaded him etc so I won't say over 300 but I wouldn't be surprised if he was. Had good teeth and knew how to use em. Fellas don't get complacent. I've seen guys say I don't need a cut kit etc to much to carry etc and I didn't have mine cause so much is in it and heck suppose to be a short hunt right?! Wrong!!! I would have paid 10xs the cost for some gauze and ace wraps.

Guys don't let it be to late to learn the hard way I almost did. Been on plenty no big deal quick hunt blah blah... learn from the mistakes others of us have made. Had enough back at the truck to help long enough to get back to the vet. It was the guys that called me up to come out first time in on a hog hunt with dogs so I wanted to show them a good time and all that good stuff. If nothing else bring some gauze and ace wraps in your pockets. Pressure is the best cure for leaks. Petey should make a full recovery and is doing alot better but it was on the brink of being much worse. Here's the group I'm in the orange shirt my bro in law is behind me. He's never been on a hog more than 5lbs in the woods and the other guys had never been hog hunting before so it was a good hint overall got a real nice boar and a good eatin sow and some new guys got to see what its all about. Dogs will heal up fine and super proud of both of em Shag held the bay good and Petey caught like a champ. I have a back pack I keep all my stuff in. It has my tracking collars, unit, knife, pistol, long range antenna for unit, spare antennas for collars, batteries, headlight, break stick, and a cut kit. When I get the dogs out and collar them up and get what I need on me the bag gets thrown on the wheeler. I may not have it at the bay but it ain't far away. U could hunt for months and not need a cut kit. The one time u leave it at home or in truck is when the crap hits the fan.

True that!! I never go hunting with out my cut kit that fills a back bag up! glad to her that sucker is out the woods..

Aw I've got plenty in my cut kit I didn't even unload my wheeler this time. Super small track of land so we just pulled up and unloaded the dogs and started hunting. Didn't even think about getting the kit out heck well be close enough I figured...wrong. I will always carry some sort of trauma kit on me from now on. Close enough may just be to far...
