Close Calls... Scary Moments... BAD hogs!!!

Id like to hear about some of yalls close calls or scary moments with big bad hogs....

352lb boar hog
... this hog was wreaking havoc on a small deer lease near Huntsville. Its had already knocked down and destroyed 5 feeders and we could tell he was BIG footed mutha!!! It was hot though, early August. So we baited an old waller and just waited.. within the week he was hitting it. Marshall, Macee and I slipped out there one evening around 4. The dogs cold trailed straight to them, maybe 300 yards and were bayed in semi-open pine plantation. Marshall walked in with the dogs so was quickly there and watched as this hog had no run in him. He was picking dogs out and running them!!! Marshall said he was throwing dogs 10 and 15 feet in the air... We had 5 cur dogs and Macee's mini schnauzer down. I had Chico(CD) with me on the 4 wheeler and it took me a few minutes to get there. I was abt 60 yards out when I turned him loose, Marsh was already at the bay waiting. Chcio hit, got thrown abt 5 feet straight up and caught like a champ, never let go again!! MArsh quickly grabbed the spinning boar hog, but his feet got tangled in some briars.. The hog quickly hooked through the CD, jeans and boot and cut M.. I got there just as its happening and hit hima as hard as I could and barely budged him. So I went around to the other side and grabbed for his front leg, the hog spun faster than imaginable and was coming! By now all Marshall had was tail and was literally skiing behind this monster. He proceded to chase me at a flat out run for 30 yards...CD, cur dogs and Marshall all hanging on!! they cut off and I quickly ran back, 2 minutes later we had him pinned between two trees and finally were able to flip him!! We began tying him, but Macee showed up and it was decided that she'd just kill him! She wanted revenge, her schnauzer was cut pretty good and got lost in the melee, she was sure he was dead but had actually rolled out hunting....

 This was and is the BADDEST hog i have ever caught. Marshall had to get 22 stictches in his muscle and skin on the left side of his shin!! I seriously contemplated getting out of hog hunting, it was a scary ass moment but thats why we do it!!! You never know whats gonna happen and the adrenaline rush of not knowing what you may have bayed makes it all worthwhile

It for sure wasnt the baddest we have caught but SHE.. yeah i said she scared the dog water out of me... We had a bay around 900 yards from the truck and a soy bean field between us and the bay so we took off on foot. We had to go through a slough that was dried up and one the way down the bank my catch dog (cain) decided he wanted to drag my fat self down the bank.. Anyways when we got around 150 yards from the bay (knowing i shouldn't do this) i sent cain. I ran as fast as i could to the bay, my cousin had the handheld and was sayin cain wasnt there yet! I kept on runnin cause i knew he would get there. The bay was echoing in the river banks and i could tell thats why he wasnt there yet. Anyways tryin to get down the river bank was a task in its self... When i did get down their i seen cain come up out of the water and fell over.. laying on the bank!! I knew i had to take care of business though we had an uncaught hog in the water. My brother and cousins catch dog caught for about three seconds and they went under. So i jumped in about two feet off the bank which was knee deep. then went right to waist deep. The pig seen me and started twords me. I backed up in about knee ankle deep water and started kicking her off of me and by all means she was determened!! after my kawabunga kicks i finally got her hard enough to turn her around enough to leg her.. well i had the tip of her foot barely.. Anyways my cousin leaned out on a log and grabbed a leg. Finally got her under control and started checking dogs.. The whole time i was thinkin i lost cain.. But to my suprise he was up and tryin to get even on a dead pig.. All dogs were ok and made it out with all dogs able to walk out..

Guys I wont even try to tell you how big we believed this hog to be But I have one on my wall that weighed #325 and this hog DWARFED him. This story is about Skitzer... I borrowed him from by buddy DaisyDog last night for a short hunt with a client this morning and my last words to Phillip AKA DaisyDog. was I sure hope I dont get him killed tomorrow and Phillip assured my that if that happened he would go doing what he loves to do. The bey dogs (two little plott gyps) beyed about 200 yds in front of us and we took off to them and about 75yds out I let SKITZER go, he went strait to the bey! Expecting to hear something happen relatively quickly, nothing did, bay dogs stopped beying, no squeeling, no grunting, I said sounds like it broke! so we waited about 10 mins. and it dawned on me that I had a DC30 on Skitzer so I pulled out the Garmin only to show him beying about 60yds in front of us so I immediately thought the worst, Skitzer must be dead! so I took off running to him only to find a monster hog standing over him with him stuck to the hogs ear, this hog has not made a sound and as I moved in to get a closer look the hog saw me and charged me but he didnt get to far with Skitzer yanking on the side of his head but he picked the bulldog up and started ramming him into a big tree. I could see the hogs enormous cutters burried into Skitzers belly, he was picking him up and carrying him around like he was nothing and everytime I would try to get in an help him the hog would rush me. To make a long horrifying story shorter, Skitzer finally got the hogs head trapped between two trees and I ran into him and burried the huge blade you see in the pics into what I thought was his heart only to have him spin around with Skitzer on his head and come after me again. The hog broke with the bulldog on his head and went strait into the slew, that didnt work out to good for the hog because Skitzer was drowning him so he brought Skitzer back to the bank, this time he got LEGGED and got STUCK AGAIN!!!! the one thing I will never forget is that hog was trying to kill that dog, you could see it in his eyes, and the way he looked at me??? Im not so sure he didnt want me even more. I would just like to say Job well done Skitzer!! you kept that hog off me when I could have done nothing to help myself, Im just sorry I didnt get there sooner. I would like to close this story with the good news. SKITZER NEVER HAD A SCRATCH!!! The hog NOT SO MUCH.  Skitzer Im proud of you, you didnt do 1/2 bad for being 1/2 Pitbull.......

i was using my great ancestors skills pasted way down many generations to me.. lol no seriously I had to do somethin. i had nothin to climb but a steep river bank. its probably a good thing i was in waist deep water. probably wet myself and didn't even know it. lol

My experience is kinda like yours Tshelly,,,

We seen a big hog track and he had been hittin a wallow,, so we started pourin corn in it to see if we could catch him.... so one moring at daylight we turned a few dogs loose on what seemed to be somewhat fresh sign of the big hog, well all the dogs left and after about 5 minutes they started back in, everyone except my ol red gyp, she stayed gone about 10 min. more and we could barely hear her booger bark aways in there, so we hauled butt to her cut some help to her and walked in there with buster(my catchdog), once we got close to em, they were in some thick briars and vines and he broke and ran and they sat him down in about 50 yards and he was bayed in a little opening in the creek bottom. So we turned buster loose from about 20 yards and watched that hog meet him halfway, now buster is no little dog (he is 1/4 dogo 1/4 pit and 1/2 cur and weighs about 100 pounds) and he chunked his butt about 5 foot in the air and buster came back down and that hog slung him again before he even had a chance to get aholt, finnaly he got a ear and the other dogs caught and that hog was walking around with them dogs and with us tryin to get a leg, we finnally got him hobbled and that wasn't easy has he was STRONG.... he had cut buster through the vest and into the guts and no other dogs was cut, well now the fun part started, we cut him and when I turned him loose i climed up a tree and he camped out on me and didn't want to leave it felt like he was there for an hour, he was bitin and hittin the tree i was up  my dad had went and tied the dogs to a tree about 150 yards away, and one of them puppies let out one yelp and he stopped what he was doin and perked up and started listening and strutted over to the dogs and then he trying to fight them as they were tied to a tree, dad ran him off and he only cut one not bad. That was by far the baddest and strongest hog we've caught. I hope we catch him next year as a barr

usally we put the back hobbles above their hocks and that would've taken out alot of slack, but his legs were too big around so they wouldn't go over 'em.

I carry about 2-3 different length sets with me going to the bay.  I've been there, done that.

I was hunting in my buddies old abandoned orange grove about a year ago before he lost the lease, We had a perfect wind to let the dogs wind off the top of a big dike.  Doc (my cur) started whining in the back of the truck so we cut him, my cat Bella, and two of my buddies dogs loose. Waited for about 10 minutes and then heard Bella bayed solid. Me and my buddy Danny set out on foot while Chad and Justin brought the truck. I got there and Doc and Spec had it caught on the ears while Bella had ahold of his sack and he is still damn near in a trot. I looked around and there is no one around to help me out. Finally caught up to the hog and legged him and flipped him, then everyone got there to help me out and get the dogs off. Doc was the only dog still holding on luckily because the hog got some traction and threw me off of him, spun around and was about to be on top of me and thankgod chad ran over and got him legged again.
So we didnt tie him or anything we just backed the truck up to him and were gonna put him straight in the dog box. I grabbed ahold of his ears and Chad and Justin had the rest, we picked him up and then he jerked his head and my hand slipped off of his ears and i dropped him, picked him up again and got him in the box and that was the end of it. Got into the truck and turned on the light i had a gash about 8 inches down the inside of my forearm. Went and got 18 stitches at the hospital and went home for the night.
The next day took him to a hog hunting outfitter to sell and he weight 305 with 3 and a half inches on both sides.

craig had been watching a corn feild and had been seeing some giant tracks around it and also the owner had seen some rooten in the middle of the feild by the center pivot of a irragation water & to make the story even better craig had went close to the same area the year before & found a hog that trashed his cd & a up and coming pup costing a 1000 at the vet and the boar hog getting away , with that told craig had a score to even up with a bad boar and me knowing this story I was a little scared for my dogs going to this place knowing we might meet up  with this hog . we met at craigs and circled the corn feild on foot with the dogs & didnt hit anything , so we regrouped and took a path towards the middle of the feild , before we got there the dogs had bayed , I let the  2  cds loose & took off running behind them not being able to see anything but 10 foot tall corn stalks , we broke out in a 20 yard opening in the center of the feild where the pivot was and a cage surrounding it the hog had backed up against it & was slinging dogs left & right , I tried to grab the hog by the back leg but the hog slung my smallest cd off and came at me with the 70 lb  cd on his side & I shot him in the head to end his dog thrashing career . craig scored the hog & he scored # 3 in the open feild weight class hogs 330lbs 3 inch tusk 2.5 inch circumfrence also my dogs were wearing guardian series vest , they saved the cds life , the guardian kevlar had 6 holes through the neck area in the vest and cost me 500 at the vet , I told jc the story at ugly dog and ask them if they could repair the vest & he said they could so I sent them the vest, so yesterday I recieved the vest in the mail & opened the box & had two brand new guardian kevlars to replace the others at no charge , a top notch outfit thank you ugly dog , by the way craig is mounting the hog

Me and some buddys went to a new place this particular hunt. One of my buddys had his 3 dogs on the ground along with the fellar that took us to this place had one dog out. They was walking the dogs up thru a thicket and I stayed at the 4-wheeler with the CD's. Was there about 30 min. I heard a dog open then another and then another. I grabbed a CD and headed that away, then the hog broke before I could get there. So I went back to the wheeler and drove on down the road. Saw one of the guys that was a member of this place and he told me they were after a big hog. I had heard big hog before but I wasn't expecting what was about to happen. So I drove on down and I could here the dogs baying again. So I grabbed a CD and started to the bay. I turned my 1 CD loose before I ever saw the hog (MISTAKE). I had another in the box but didn't get it. Anyway I ran in there and he had it caught. This big hog was spinning him around like a helicopter. The bay dogs would not help him out and I couldn't get a leg with the hog spinning. He knocked him off and drove him in the ground.  About that time the hog eyeballed me with some good ivory sticking out and started toward me when my bulldog recaught. I am still here by myself at this time but I can here my buddies coming. I holler for them to hurry up. My buddy snuck in behind the hog while I had his attention he reached for a leg and the hog broke again. My CD fell off and when he got up to catch the hog again I new he was in trouble I could see his guts dragging behind him. He caught again but couldn't hold him (RIP Torch). By this time one of the members had got there and he had a 30 cal. carbine. I told him to shoot the hog when the bay dogs cleared. He shot the hog dust flew from the hog and shook it off and ran into a big briar patch. The dogs quit baying for a second and we look up and out comes a big red hog. We wound up catching the big red hog about a mile later. We never did find the other hog that reaked havoc on me that morning. I think about that hunt alot and wander what I may could have done different. To this day that is the reason I never go to a bay with one CD. I wish we could have got that bad hog.

i did something really stupid one time. i was hunting some property that has a big hill that slumps down into a low area next to a thick shrub thicket. i went and hunted the day before and didn't strike anything, but saw the hogs in there the next day. i went home and got my dogs and came back by myself. turned loose and the hogs were still on the hill grazing and my dogs didn't see em yet. i was walking behind them and they saw the hogs (8-12) and started running in that direction. all these hogs were good size..150-200lbs or better. I started running behind the dogs cause i knew it was about to get crazy. The hogs started running towards my dogs! Im thinking..."you have got to be kidding me!" I guess they thought my dogs were some sows or something. as soon as they figured out they were dogs, they turned around and ran the other direction and they all split up. some ran down to the shrub thicket, some ran up the hill and over to the other side, and some ran down the hill. it was the craziest thing you've ever seen. There was one decent little tree and it was about 50 yards behind me. So here i am, like an idiot, with all these pigs darting in every direction flying by me at 20-30mph. I could have been killed! They had a good bay and i went in and there were 3 other pigs watching the bay, and i mean big pigs! Remember, no trees...just small shrubs. I'm freaking out, the other pigs looked like they were gonna double-team my dogs. Then they were looking at me like food. im sitting there thinking please don't charge me. finally they ran off and my main dog went and bayed a big one. I stuck the first pig they bayed, but it was only about 80 pounds. i don't know where that one came from because all the pigs on the hill were huge. Went to the second bay and sent the catch dog in again and heard some deep grunts and some how the pig got loose. caught the catch dog and waited till they bayed again and didn't hear or see anything for an hour. finally got the dogs back and they ended up bayed again on the way to the truck. another smaller hog, but this one was about 110lbs. anyway, it was crazy.....caught some smaller pigs that i didn't even see, but the big boyz were darting around like crazy when they first struck. crazy evening!!!
