I remember reading somewhere that it takes 6 months for heartworms to go from larvi to worm.so if you killed them any time before then dog was fine.i guees
i just need to stay on top of it better.

I give mine at the first of the month every month. This is the program that I have followed for over 30 years.

I do mine monthly most of the year.  I cut back to every 45 days or I may skip a month during the cold months (NOV-FEB).

Do you prefer to give it under the skin or down the throat?

Down the throat, .1 cc per every do pounds!
.5 cc for a 50# dog
