I went out to heat treat a couple blades this morning. Got the forge all heated up and wouldn't you know my wife got company so they both settled in to watch. Dang it, I'm not used to an audience. Fortunately both the hardening and tempering went pretty smooth. Tomorrow will be the final assembly. I made 2 different styles and kinda had one in mind for a new one for myself but wouldn't you know I like the other better. I will keep one and the other will go to the ADBA National show for the raffle. And no I don't have the picture thing figured. I still use a flip phone too!

when i get done up here with my schooling, I'm gonna finish up the knife I'm working on out of a hoof rasp. shaping it without heating it up is slow, even using a grinder.

While I was heat treating these I put 2 more rasps in the forge to anneal when I shut it down. Just using the heat I already had. It makes them soft enuf to drill that way and also grinds easier.

that works good if you got a forge, but only thing i got is a cutting torch, welder, grinder and drill motor and bits. i would like to anneal it to make it easier to work, but tempering it again is where i don't have the tools for. the grinder with water i hope is working, not letting it get to hot, and making lite passes. iv gotta start tapering the end where I'm gonna put my edge, and then lay it out and find a way to cut the metal away for the handle. i may use a cut off wheel and have the wife keep water poured on it to keep the rasp cool, or find someone with a band saw and take my time cutting the handle out.

You don't have to worry so much about heating up the handle area. You sure are welcome to come up if it works out for you. I worry about the knife being brittle unless you temper the spine but you may have that planned I guess.

Naw, didnt know bout annealing and tempering that part of it. I know it will be brittle bc its so hard, but didnt know how to get around that part without a forge.

Thank you. Charles you can temper that spine with a cakepan a visegrips and your torch. I put the knife on edge down in about 3/8" of water in the bottom of pan. Then I heat the spine till it's just blue right down to the tip. I lose a lil hardness at the tip but I've never had a tip snap off either.
