Mid day hunt

Well we got some rain yesterday and EVERYTHING here is wet wet. My youngest boy Slayde had a half day at school so when is picked him up at about noon, we went home and loaded dogs. I guess it was right at 1pm when we cast Ava and Outlaw. Within 10-15 minutes of being on the ground, they were bayed about 800 yards east of us. By the time we got over there they had a shoat about 50-60 lbs caught. Slayde got to stick it with his new blade that WOW made for him. It cut like it was warm butter. The dogs relayed and within a couple minutes were bayed again. This time the hog wouldn’t stand. They would get him stopped and he’d break, stop break, stop break. I knew he was about to run out of woods but I guess he thought he was fast enough to outrun them to the place he wanted to go. He was wrong! They had home stopped in the wide open about 700 yards. As we are getting there, the hog decides he wants to be back where he started. He would try to take off and they would dive in behind him and he would spin a hole in the ground like a reigning horse. We sent the Loki and Reba and he flat swatted Loki and poked him in the belly. He should be fine. We called it a hunt after that so we could take care of ole Loki. The hog was 200# on the head. We had the second hog tied by 1:30. I was proud of them for the hustle and the work they did stopping the second hog..

  Takes some pretty good dogs to find hogs after lunch. That is a nice colored boar. We sure got the rain too.

That’s them kind of dogs that put a man on hogs.  Not the kind that a man got to find the hogs for em.  Lol.  Fine colored Bo hog rite there man.  Glad ur cd dodged a bullet on that one man.

Thanks guys. I was proud of them. It was good to throw a little curve ball at the dogs. It’s been a while since I cast mid day. It’s usually morning hunts for us. I’m not mad enough at hogs to hunt at night anymore. I think I’m starting to show my age.

Thanks Cracker. I like’em but they ain’t for everybody. I figure as long as they keep making it fun for me I’ll keep hunting them. At the end of the day, a good dog is dog that makes the person feeding/hunting it happy. They aren’t bad for accidents. Their collie mother was taken advantage of by one of those Cajun plott hounds.

You're exactly right Buddy I do believe that you have figured it out.When you see the dogs of the past that "YOU" fell in love with coming out in them then your doing something right.I think that some people don't realize that.We breed these dogs for ourselves and they aren't for everyone they're what we want and enjoy in a dog.They really do sound like Nice dogs though.

Good hunt. Weren’t you running a short vest for a while? Do you think that’s why he took the shot?

Jsh it wouldn’t have mattered on the vest length. The poke was about even with the front end of where his sheath connects to his belly and just off to one side a little. The hog got him on the third time he hit him. When Loki got to the hog it was slightly quartered away because he was busy trying to keep the bay dogs from getting to his back end. Loki is one of those catch dogs that has a spot or mark. He knows exactly where he wants to catch every hog. In this case he had to kinda cross the hogs face and the hog scooped and chunked him. About the time he landed the hog hit him again and flipped his butt straight up and exposed his belly. The next sling of his head is when he got the belly shot. It could’ve been worse but the bay dogs hit him in the back end and the hog spun to get them off. They hung on though and spun with him. That gave Loki and Reba a chance to ear him. I only know this because I had a video that I watched in slow motion. I love doing that because you can really see what everyone is doing and why or how different things happen. The video wasn’t a good one but good enough to be able to see what I needed to.

Man that’s a bad spot to take a hit. Glad everything worked out okay. As we’ve discussed on here before, I’ve been weighing the pros and cons of a shorter vest.

Knock on wood, I’ve been running this shorter vest for about a year and a half and I haven’t had any cuts that a long vest would’ve prevented. I’ve had some on the front forelegs, or in the leg right at the leg hole but again, nothing a vest could’ve prevented.

I've ran a short vest for yrs and the same thing T-dog I feel like if the bulldog is strong enough and knows how to catch one properly they should be able to keep one out the back end.I think the mobility and heat advantage outway the extra protection.
