Going to be ordering some new work chaps from RockinW here pretty soon, and I need some input regarding style and options. My current chaps are a real basic batwing style, with outside pocket and snap closure. I've been thinking about getting a style like the Texas Style Step ins, shown here at the Big Bend website. http://www.bigbendsaddlery.com/chaps.htmlSomething I am not sure about on this style, is that I wear Cinch carpenter jeans, and they are pretty loose fitting. Will the jeans have a tendency to bunch up under the thigh area in this style chap? Also, Pockets.... Is there any reason to go with an inside/ pant style pocket over an outside pocket without a flap. Outside pocket without flap Inside / pant style Thanks in advance. Chris

I am not an expert on chaps, so this might be a foolish question but curiousity is getting the better of me. with the inside the chaps pocket, the pants style one, wouldn't it have a tendancy to make the opening tighter when you sat on a horse, which would make getting stuff in or out of it harder? I know with all the gear i wear anything with inside pockets is difficult and infuriating.

I have been thinkin about gettin those same chaps. I personally like outside pockets with no flap. The ones your lookin at fencein pliers would slide right in a hold good. But i dont know about the jeans. I just gave in about a month ago to wearin cinch jeans.

Catchrcall, Good point about things being harder to get at inside pants pockets, as opposed to outside pockets. Hogdog05, I used to wear Wranglers....back when I was about 12 and could fit in a 32" waist. Been wearing Cinch carpenter pants for as long as I can remember. Problem is, they are 50 bucks, and I can't keep a pair looking new for better than a couple weeks. They all end up with holes from barbed wire. T. Angel, I might end up with another pair of bat wing this go around too. I just like the idea of the step ins, but not too confident in keeping the pants from bunching. Did you have pockets put in yours? If so, what style?

Chris dont want to make you upset but the last ones are not called pant style. The correct name is Shotgun leggins.Every body thinks that the batwigs are the ones that the really old cowboys use to use but the shotguns were what they really used. The Spainish are the ones that came up with the idea. The shotguns are the ones that I use,I dont like cow horns and cavles feet getting down in the buckles on the bat wings.

Mr Ronnie,
When I said "pant style" I was referring to the style of pockets in the shotgun legging. I don't think shotguns leggings will work for me with my loose fitting jeans.
BTW, Mandi said she is buying these for me for my birthday. Apparently she talked to Luke / RockinW and he told her what measurements to get. She could not figure out a way to get the measurements without me knowing, so she fessed up and told me to order them the way I want.

Matt, No reason, just not my "style" Mr Ronnie, No sweat. Looking back at the post, I can see where it wasn't real clear just what I was asking about.

I use the shotgun chaps. They work well, but they get heavy when I am running to a bay through wet grass. They have save my legs from some bad boars though. I see a lot of guys wearing the chinks...couldnt a good hog still cut your legs all up with the chinks on?

Chris if you know a good leather smith you could get a pair made for about the same price as buying a pair from a retailer. I have a pair of leggins that I bought second hand that fit me just right for $35 dollars about six years ago. The guy wanted $75 but I cant buy somthing without trying to lower the price. Anyways they are zippered up the entire leg and are a bit heavy, but they work well in the think stuff. Lots of briar and rose hedge down here and they cover the entire leg. No thorns in your calves.

Thanks Diamond G,
Rockin W aka Luke here on the board is who will be making them. Having seen some of his saddles first hand, I have faith in him building me some quality chaps. Really just wanted to get some input on some of the options, and what features people like on their chaps.

Oh I didn't think about it until later but mine are a real heavy (thick) sadle seat type leather. But it is very soft and plyable unlike some slick leather of the same thickness. Patrick

Chris, here's my 2 cents. i wont really make any recommendations, but here's some pros and cons that might help you decide what you might like best. batwings usually have straps of some sort to fasten around the legs. step ins are usually referred to as bells, or just step-ins or leggins. they are more handy to put on than anything with snaps, buckles, etc., cause you just pull em on like jeans, dont have to try to bend around to fasten em. however, they are less handy to take off. there are also 2 different lengths of the step in part. the shorter one is only closed to the knee, whereas the other closes to mid calf, but bells out below the knee and does not fit tight from the knee down. the ones closed to knee are gonna "flop" more on the bottoms. the ones closed further will flop less, but be tougher to get on and off.
as to pockets, an outside pocket with a flap will hang on stuff all the time. most people who rope much will only use one on the left (if they rope right handed) because when you're pullin something the rope runs up under the flap, and is likely to tear it up. an outside pocket without a flap is handiest to get stuff in and out of, but stuff is more likely to fall out of them. inside pockets are harder to get in and out of, but whatever you put in em, stays in em.
hope this helps

Luke if you have some pics of your chaps throw em up here so I can drool a little. I think I want the chinks with a mitten pocket with soft very flexible light weight leather. The ones I have now are the opposite of what I want haha

Take those chinks you had and Craig's, regular stitching, no conchos, floral pattern on the upper portion, real light colored bottoms and darker brown top, and put the pocket on the inside......pm me a price.
