What I heard on the radio is a couple that lost their ten year old son to a pit bull attack in Kilgore are pushing for a law that will make owning a pit in Texas a third degree felony. To datd the bill has no sponsor in Austin

seems like i read that somewhere too. my heart goes out to the parents that lost their child, but that's the wrong way to go about fixing the problem. The first two questions I'd ask, although a bit harsh are
where was the owner of the dog?
where were the parents of the child?

Charlie Parker on WOAI news had a little research done on this this morning.
There have been a little over 400 dog related attacks in the last 37 years. That averaged out to about 12 a year with 3 a year being caused by Pits. His question was, " what about the other nine deaths a year by other breeds ? "
And the couple that are pushing " Justin's Law " received $7 mil in the settlement against the owner of the two pits that attacked their son. I guess the cash wasn't enough.

cash aint ever enoungh to lossing a child but holding the owner respondsbile is the key. There is no replacing their child but you can replace a dog that cant be control and obviously this owner had no control over his dogs or mistreated the dogs. I DON'T HOW PEOPLE CAN CLAIM PIT BULLS TO BE SO VICIOUS BUT I CAN TAKE MINE HUNTING SEND THEM IN TO CATCH AND TAKE HOGS, AND THEN BRING THEM HOME AND THEY LICK MY 8 MONTH OLD TO DEATHK, PLAY, AND NEVER TURN ON ANOTHER DOG. IT THE PEOPLE THAT MAKES A DOG MEAN NOT THE DOG IN MOST CASES. THEREFORE, IF THE OWNER WOULD HAVE BEEN RESPONDSIBLE ENOUGH HE OR SHE WOULD NOT HAVE TREATED THE DOG IN THAT MANNER OR REALIZED THE DOG WAS A TREAT AND HAD IT TERMINATED. JMAO

I agree with you. I had a pit that I used to take to Trailblazer events that had hundred of Boy Scouts there and he'd have kids crawling all over him all day long, sometimes I even let him wear his vest to show what it looked like and he'd still stay calm. All the while being tied up close to other dogs that the kids were playing with too.

I agree, but you shouldnt be responsable if you are maintaining your dogs properly and someone climbs a fence into their yard. And what if a kid climbs a fence to break into your house or pick at your dogs,, do dogs know age when someone is violating their territory? I know most dogs are real good with kids when they come to their homes as guest. Not being cruel, but if thats the case, if he'd not climbed over the fence, he'd be here today. But who knows, maybe he was trying to get a ball he hit into the yard,,, it's tragic for everyone involved and now for pitbull owners too

no dog should attack a child period. if a dog is that aggressive he should be put down I agree with Jeremy If the dog is aggressive it needs to be in a kennel inside the yard. I have driven and walked past a yard with sometimes 2 pitbulls that if they could get out they would eat me up. I think keeping dogs of this type in our yards is showing our lack of responsibility not only for the innocent kids but what if these dogs get loose in the neighborhood. If someone runs from them and screams this has the potential to trigger that predator response to over take and catch. The pit doesn't bite as often as other breeds but once it attacks it usually does not stop. One incident here and there will get these good dogs banned. I have owned pits and own one right now and I make it a point to socialize it with all types of people and also have it around other dogs. If I have one that shows aggression towards people I will cull it.

I wonder wat the situation was with those dogs. If they were the type that acted like they wanted to eat people up,, and if thats the case, why would the poor kid climb the fence. I saw on a bulldog board that an episode with 2 american bulldogs occurred in Texas recently, they got out and attacked their own kid. Weird thing was the child was treated by paramedics on the scene , seems like if a bulldog was really after someone,, they'd be more seriously injured. Things are just going crazy, it seems, these days
