Historically the Great Dane is the boar hound. Every dictionary I checked web defines it as a large Dane type dog "historically used to hunt wild boar.

from research I did this is what conclusion I have come to, Germans used a large "dane like" dog for wild boar, when the dog became more popular and bred to look a certain way the Europeans named them Great Danes and the name stuck. However if you look into history the other countries also had their boar hounds, just a term as we call "Hog Dogs" and they were not Great Danes but also larger dogs, so Historically the German Boar Hunting dog, turned into/became the breed the Great Dane

Id say finding a Dane that gets the job done on hogs these days would be like finding a wiener dog that can whip and catch a badger.  "Dachshund" is an old German word for "badger hound" and thats what they were bred for centuries ago. Like the Dane they have been bred for "eye catching" house pets for decades and decades. The chance of finding one that would work would be close to winning the lotto in my opinion. I personally like the Dane on the HGW show but I think he is an exception. I couldnt even imagine all the culls a breeder would go through in a lifetime trying to resurrect that breed for what it was historically bred for. |
