Might want to cross reference this but I hear they have a registry for "boar hounds" which is anything that can be used to hunt and run hogs down. Stag hounds, sight hound crosses...like the Aussie dogs. I have seen some thick brush in Tx, don't think dogs that big would manage too well in that.

I agree, Grt Danes as a whole havent been worked in eons. Good luck finding a good one.

boar hound... my guess is that they take 3 years to mature??? ???and then the dog develops arthritis and the average lifespan is 7 years.

I agree that the Dane has been and is always going to be ruined no matter how many times it shows up on reruns chasing that spotlight over and over on tv, i hunted with them way back, they are dangerous, they dont lock up and let go and kinda sissy fight, they are slow, caca too much and silent and slow, why mess with them.  On the other hand, Ninja, be very carefull underestimating weeine dogs, they are still dead game and will go to ground and figh it out, if i had not see some right out of a pound i would not believe it, there are more winnie dog guys hunting than great dane promotors for sure.  I would never bet on a great dane to do anything, but i would taken even odds of a winner dog going to ground and catching or fighting a fox coon armadillo badger or even small hogs, i seen po boys run them in cactus on javinlinas in 20 acre patches where big dogs wont hardly enter due to soild cactus pads and thorns, now if we could get some semen collected and bred that to a frozen Great dane found in a Glacier i might take odds on that working hogs but not anything alive today, a monk here where i live used to raise those Harquilin danes, all of them have bad hips and cost too much, i have rat terriers with more leg mussle and bone than any great danes left, they are a ruined breed of show dog, bet on the winnie dog!!!!lol

I want to say Marshall on here had a miniature schnauzer that was a hog finding machine. Not sure how that came about, but I guess any dog can learn to be a hog dog.

I would be concerned after watching HGW that a dane would let go. He looked a little soft mouthed and gummy. I understand that some of them may catch like a bulldog, but so do some Catahoulas and BMCs. Just because some individuals catch well without going soft mouthed does not mean that the breed can be counted on as a sure enough catch dog breed. I would be a whole lot more worried about a Dane pup turning out than I would a bulldog. By sheer numbers, I would bet that far more bullies catch hard than go soft, hence the reason they are considered the standard.

Perhaps you could reasonably count on a Dane being a help dog, that way you would not be disappointed if it did not lock and hold like a bulldog (which in my own opinion is the only way a catch dog is safe). However, you would sure enough have a LOT of money into your pup by the time he was ready to try out. Holy cow, I bet they eat more than a horse.

For a catch dog I"ll have to bet on the Pit... Running catch dog would be 1/2 hound 1/2 pit or 1/2 mtn cur 1/2 pit.

You can't train hard mouths and lack of self preservation. If a dog has it, it's born with it.

x2 a dog is either born with it or without.

This is extreme but an example. The best dog trainer in the world is hired to train a weenie dog to compete and win against the greyhounds at the dog track. 2 years later with the greatest trainer in the world the dog is still a weenie dog and he still can't keep up with the greyhounds. A hunting dog is born and a good trainer/handler can bring out the best in it but the dog has to have it to be good at it. Also the handler can set the dog up for greater success when hunting in the woods by making the right plan to hunt the woods in a certain way at different times of the year or certain weather conditions. This is only helping a good dog to hunt better but the handler can not make the dog hunt if the dog doesn't have it.

I talked with Josh about this a while back, and my understanding of what he is soing is breeding a line of boar hounds (danes) that are working dogs not pets. Even though he changed some minor specs in size etc any dog that works is excepted. He is trying to save the breed he likes to hunt from all the pet owners who have ruined the working dane as the breed was originally intended  kind of like needs to be done with ridgebacks, dogos etc. Weather or not you or I want to hunt with danes I believe we should all respect the intent of someone trying to make more working dogs.

All dog breeds that are still around are here because someone likes that particular breed otherwise it will become extinct. This world would be in trouble if we all thought exactly the same.

I do agree that so many working breeds have been ruined by folks that only care about a certain look or are only in it for the money.

One person can not save a breed without spending a ton of money. The best way would be to start a club and website that only allows working Danes and the dog has to pass certain standards before it can be bred.

The only Dane I envision in my mind is a dog that has a little pit and hound in it. I just don't think a Great Dane looked like they do now back then.

Today you can go to an irish setter or english setter show kennel and you will see narrow chested long haired dogs with narrow heads, loin, no substance etc. etc. Then you go to a hunting kennel and the same breed does not look anything like the show kennel bred dogs. The dogs in the hunting kennel are muscular, shorter hair, wider rib cage for lung capacity, wider heads for brain power etc. etc. The shorter hair for controlling the amount of briars getting hung up in the coat and the different look out of necessity to breed a functional dog for the hunt/hunter.

Good luck in bringing back the functional Great Dane.
