what pain meds can u give for a bad cut dog?

Went hunting this morning and needless to say, the hog won this hunt!  Turned out at 8 am and the dogs bumped one right away and got out of range for the wild life tracker and the garmin.  Had to reaarange our route and finally 2 hours later. We finally picked back and got on their track.  Once the garmin picked em back up, we were right on top of them.  THey showed to bay a min and them run a min.  When we got to the closest point, we stopped and heard nothing but the dogs were right there....then we seen one come draggin through the woods.  I (tonya) went into moma mode and started sewing dogs...ended up using 10 suture packs and stop counting stiches after the 1st 20....one of the dogs looked like someone took a knife to him like he was a catfish. HE was cut down his side from hip to shoulder and about 8 inches wide.  He had another cut under his jaw about 5 inches long and 3 wide.  The other dog had a few pokes to his shoulder and a pretty good cut that was as deep in meat as it was wide.   The boys worked hard....and this is the time when we feel like we let em down cause we didnt get to em in time.  Now, the dogs are sleeping in the living room and and cozy-ed up in fleece blankets! 

Now you know the pain they are in, what can I give them to help with pain?   I have sewed em up, cleaned em up before and after, cutn heal, Iodine and a shot of penicillin.   What will help em take the edge off for a good nights sleep?  They are very restless and cant get comfortable.

You can use Tylenol liquid if you got it or drop two capsuls in a syringe of water and let them break down and shoot it doown their throat.

I've been told by my vet that Tylenol is toxic to a dogs liver and to dissolve asprin 1 reg bayer aspirin to 50lb every 3 hours or use children's aspirin and go by the dosage on the bottle. You can use the chewable children's and just give to them by mouth.

bandamine.  This is a pain killer for large animals.  Use half a cc under the skin or in the mouth.  Works alot  better than any of that other stuff.

Tylenol is Toxic to a dog..........I give safety coated 81mg Asprin 1-2 in the morning and 1-2 in the evening...... asprin does thin the blood so you may want to keep an eye on the bleedin on a cut like if you give 2 just to make sure.

Mine must have a hard stomach cause they been gettin Tylenol for years and aint hurt em yet. But if vet tells you different would go with the recommendation.

after some antibiotics i would give an antiinflamatory, a lot of the time it is the swelling that is painful.

Aspirinez I got it from vetvalley suply online it's for horses and cattle it's a paste kinda like safegaurd it works really well you give one notch to 50 lbs from my experience with it it works great hope this helps

I wouldn't worry to much on pain meds....Dogs have a high tolerance to pain. If they need pain meds they prob need to be at a vet...

I use banamine, it's what I use for cows and horses and what my vet told me to use for dogs. It is like injectable asprin.

i use ketoprofin. a few cc's under the skin does wonders. im not sure how to get it on the open market . i have a good friend who is a large animal vet that hooks me up with stuff that i cant buy.

I know you said you  stiched them up but if you can get your hands on some xylocaine it will num the pain by the nerve endings that were cut.. I have  always given ibuprofen to my dogs by stickin them in weinees about 500mgs for a 50 pd dog.  Just make sure that they are not bleeding still ,,

We have a pretty decent relationship with our vet so whenever I run low I get a bottlle of Remadyl from him for hard times.  I have also read that childrens Motrin (Ibuprofin) works well and supposedly isnt toxic like the Tylenol. 

I dont use it constantly because it cant be good for the body but if I can stick my entire finger in it, the length of my hand or they have wound up at the vet then I will give it for 3 days morning and night until the initial soreness wears off.

i took my mom's boston terrier to the vet for joint issues and they gave him a script for tramadol. this is also used in humans w/ 50mg being an average dose for humans and i believe the tablets they gave the dog were 15mg but hes only a 30lb dog so if you have an old script of tramadol/ultram laying around from a sprained ankle or something i bet that would help your dog out with pain. if not go the narcotic route previously mentioned lol, IV morphine is a sure-fire method

The dogs are doing great.  Thanks for all the help and insight.  Been giving Benedryle and pen shots.  I was worried about the pain from the cuts but, they are not showing any signs of hurting too much. They are living the high life of being spoiled in the house.  lol   In a week or so, they will be just fine!  We appreciate all the help.
