I have a pregnant dog who dug a massive hole/den under her barrel. She is kept on a chain. She used to spend the heat of the day in her barrel but now mostly in her 'cave'. She also won't allow any other dog near the hole. Anyone have advice as to allowing her to have her pups in the hole or do I need to attempt to fill it in and force her to use the barrel. I haven't added any bedding to her barrel as she has a ways to go maybe that would help?
First time with a pregnant dog so open to any advice. Thank you

I have one bitch that does that and will have the pups there, I figure let her do it where she is more comfortable and then move them later, one time I moved them to the box, she moved them back, I moved them back to the box she moved them back, did this two more times and then figured momma knows best. Its the nesting instinct that causes them to dig.

Yeah I figured since she is so protective of the area. i just wanted to make sure it was safe. I can throw some clean hay in there and make a makeshift roof to keep rain off the area. Thanks for the advice/experience

She shouldnt need much hay this time of year . Most of mine try to dig a hole when they go in to labor . Just make sure if it comes a hard rain it cant run in the hole !

My cat gyp just done the same thing and she had her litter in the hole.I tried to put the pups in the barrel and she would carry them back as fast as I could put em in the barrel.I tried putting more bedding in the barrel but she drug it out and covered her pups with it.I figured they was gonna drowned in the storm but got up the next mornin and she figured it out and carried her pups to the barrel.Natural instinct usually is best.

with all them pups in her she is just like a pregnant woman, a "heat fatory" and a lot of time they dig a hole and lay in it to stay cool. As for the snapping at the other dogs, she pregnant! lol

If she is digging it is almost time to have the pups. Make sure there are no dogs in the same pen with her. She could/will get nervous and eat the pups. If she doesn't eat the pups she will be more worried about keeping the other dogs away and not focus on having her pups...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

Be careful with the hay though, keep it constantly clean because hay breeds fleas
