6/01- Bad Boar in the Shinnery

[Silverton Boar Dogs]

Pretty tough morning in the shin oak patch. It was wet for once, not at my place but 8 miles east we had 4-5 inches last night. Donnie met me before sun up to head out. He brought Denver the straight Plott and Sam. I knew tracking conditions would be good so I loaded Jessie, Grizz, and AJ, with Curly to catch.

We got to the wheat circles at daylight, pretty wet. Cast the dogs and they were sure acting piggy. We found some real good boar tracks crossing the road, and Jessie Denver and Grizz rolled on them and went to tracking. Jessie opened about a 1/2 mile in with Denver and Grizz, joining him. The race was on. We drove to try and cut them off but missed them at the next road, they had covered a mile at a pretty good clip and I could hear them bayed to our south. It was a running gun fight by the sound of things so we were pretty sure they had the big boar. I sent AJ to them for some shut down help.

They continued to bay and break, bay and break and covered another mile. Solid bay coming from a shinnery covered sand ridge and another 1/2 mile south. The bay was holding well, the boar had chosen a good place for his stand. I walked Curly in close and sent him in. The shinnery was thick and tall, the boar came to meet him and hooked him in the shoulder and threw him 6 feet in the air and 10 feet back. He gained his feet and got his bearing and jumped right back in the thicket.

Curly got a solid ear and the fight was on. Thrashing and spinning the boar was trying to shake Curly off the ear as I ran in to help. I got my first look at the boar and he was a big boy with good teeth and Curly was cut bad in the shoulder and bleeding profusely. I jumped in the mix to get a leg but the boar saw me coming, he rushed me with Curly hanging hard. Missed me with his cutter but hit me with a shoulder and knocked me to the ground. The boar spun to come for me again, but Denver hit him on the ham and spun him around. Denver saved me but payed the price. The boar got under his belly and cut him real bad, Denver was done right there. Grizz took Denvers place and the fight continued in to a clump of Mesquite. The boar was getting tired now and I tried for a leg again but he spun to meet me. As he came by I got a good stick through the ribs just before he knocked me down again. Grizz was lugging up now and Curly needed the help. I rushed in and jumped on the boars hip, got a leg and stuck him. One bad shinnery boar was down for good.

Worked on dogs for 30 minutes, Curly should be fine with some r&r he lost a lot of blood. AJ got a serious cut to the the hind leg but should heal up. RIP Denver, he saved me from a hookin' for sure but I am sorry he paid the price. Donnie is going to really miss that dog. I sent one of my good Plott cross dogs home with him to help fill the hole, but Denver will be hard to replace.

I'm sorry for Donnys loss, I only got to hunt behind Denver once and I sure did like that dog. Glad yall got this guy. Hope everyone else heals up alright.

Adora would have been the deal, but she is just about to drop some pups and is off duty

Man that must have been a little tense seeing that boar charge at you. You sure are lucky he only hit you with the shoulder when he ran at ya like that.  RIP to your buddies dog Denver, its never fun losing a dog like that but he must have been proud of that dog for his heroic efforts.

Great story it sounds like it was an epic battle, sorry to hear that a dog was lost he did his job and will forever be talked about to future generations of young hunters. Can you post a pic of the valiant dog that saved you from serious damage that would be AWESOME.....

X 100....  I've fallen hard for dogos.... and I would sure like to see that cross

Noah, I caught a lot of hogs this winter with 2 Dogos and my two Stags. Sometimes a cur dog or two and it was extremely effective.

The Dogo has more holding power and nose, the Stag has more speed and style. But when sent together they are a "perfect storm".

I have got to have some Dogos for night work, but I believe the Dogo Stag crosses will prove to be extreamly productive dogs in the daylight.
