I'm at the stage to make sure these 2 pups (7 and 9 mths) get broke off cows. I want to make sure they look the other way when cows are around. I've got some good input from my huntin brother, but if any body wants to drop a few lines---please have at it!!

Specifically- I'm wondering if I'm supposed to let them know its me pushin the button to light em up? Or do I keep it a hush hush so they dont figure out I'm the one thats makin them jump up off all four's? Or does that even matter?

If you hav a shock collar fry em. I don't hav one so if I hav problems with one after I catch them we hav a tuning session.... After we catch a hog pet on them and tell them good dog. Works for me but I'm sure lots of people do it different.

just speaking from experience of my own and what i have been told i wouldnt shock a 6 to 7 month old pup you could possibly ruin em i have broke my younger dogs off of livestock just like i have explained to you whether it been cows or horses i wont put a shock collar on em till they are atleast a year old! IMO when they are that young they dont really quite understand why you are shocking them or what is going on! put em on a couple pigs in the woods first let em know what they are suppose to be after then begin working on the trash breaking and finishing the dog out!

well i dissagree alitle tejas and i wish everybody did . i want my dogs trash broke BEFORE i actually turn them out to hunt . when done right myles the dogs don't think that anything but that cow put the hurt on it . i will put the shock collar on the 6 month old pups and let them wear it a few days and get used to it . [ long as they are separated ] so they can't chew each others collars  . this lets them get accustumed to wearing the collar and prevents them from becomeing collar wise . i assume you have bayed the pups on pigs a bit . i will just take the pups to the cow pasture and when they want to mess with the cows bump them without saying a word . you don't have to FRY  a dog just a good bump on about 3 to start then if they don't get the message increase the setting [ each dog will have differant levels of response ] jist of it is you want the dogs to think the cattle are responsible for the jolt . after a cow breaking session i will bay pigs and give them an attaboy . repeat the proccess several times till your comforatable that they are broke . soon you can walk them thru a herd with no problems . i've broke them this way after letting them bay cattle their whole time running loose on the farm till about 41/2 to 5 months old when i penned them up and started working them o pigs . this works for me but there are many differant ways but the sooner the better for me cause i'm ready to actually hunt a dog at around 7 to 8 months old . but heck some fellers don't even worry about breaking them they just hope thay don't wind up in someones cow pature lol .  i did it for years the old hard way hollering and chaseing dogs chunkin rocks limbs boots whatever was handy  lol

get'em hooked on the desired game first . then put them where they can get on the undesired game and watch .  when they FIRST start to engage try to fry his brain with the e-collar. call him in and put on desired game and encourage him .

repeat as needed

Feed them hogs and more hogs....have a 10 month old out of good cow dog stock but he won't bother cows cause all he's ever been on is hogs. Feed him tons hogs and trashbreaking of cattle will be much easier.

Whoop dat a$$!

I have a dog that is about a year old and the only thing she barks at is hogs. I think it's because we just kept putting her on hogs with other dogs.

run one pup at a time with a couple of older dogs that are cattle broke. If he or she goes to a cow and the others will not assist you will already be one step ahead on calling the dog out. A lot of times this will work without having to inflict any pain or fear in a pup. If a pup is hunting scared of the outcome for every time he trashs it will make them not want to hunt. therfe are a lot of dogs that there is just no other way to break them from trash other than a good ol beating or shock therapy. But I personally try this and it works for me a lot of the time. enough to were I don't have to get abusive in any way. I would rather be smarter than the dogs im hunting. Not at all saying I don't whip one. But when I do I see that that's the only way they will learn and they take one good enough that they listen after that for the most part.

I would use the shock collar lightly, I wouldn't fry them for sure. Wouldn't use it at all if they are not baying hogs yet.

Y'all guys all have some good input on this topic, real good suggestions. I figure I will highly benefit from every reply. Thanks for it all. I know it's probly easy to do now that I've got lots of hands on insight, it's prob easier than I think. 1) yep, the pups are definetly on course to findin/bayin hogs, doin real good at it too! 2) I never intentionally have took em thru a herd of cows so i cant say yet how the male pup will do. I know the female YBMC will catch wind, or on sight, and bay the heck out of cows. So she is def gonna need shock therapy. But shes very smart and sensitive, so its should be easy to fix in a few sessions. 3)Yes it has a tone.

Twill-yes I do trust my kin folks techniques,  J has been good at breakin his dogs, I witnessed em  get broke thru the past yr, i learned a lot from how he does it. My goal is to see others methods too, if that's okay with you, sir? And out of sheer respect due to your proven success, I will allow u to reply to my questions by smiley face icons ONLY. you get your point across very well with them(and there are plenty for u to choose from).

You ain't gonna send a guy to the electric chair for a crime he hadn't commited yet! I'm saying let em screw up on their own just hunt em with the tri tonic on when they mess up correct it and as far as frying them that stupid put it on the lowest setting then move it up til they jump they won't need much!

Don't shock them an call them to u. IMO. They can associate the shocking with getting to far out from u. If my dogs run a deer I shock them but I don't call them I want them to go back hunting not come to me. If u have a tone on ur shock collars u can tone them and call them to u an they learn Wat the tone is. I hunt a lot of hounds an can call an tone all my hounds off a bear tree or a hog bay. I have took sum hunt out of dogs in the past by shocking them an calling them to me. They think they got to stay right with u. Shock them for baying cows an don't say ne thing to them just go on hunting.
