I'm like mud dog I don't care if its cut or not as long as I can get it to hunt. If I'm not selected for this I would like to see one up close hunt. Just to see with my own eyes what these dogs are or could be. With what I run now I think it would be an interesting addition.

The first person who got it would get the pup not cut. But if I got the pup back I would get it cut and give it to a pet only home. If you're ever down my way give me a shout and maybe we can work out a hunt

Not everyone breeds for money. Why would you not want a dog that is proven to be excellent, bred? If I recall, one of your first posts was about you wanting to breed Dogos to make money off of them, like your dad.

Fact of the matter is, if you want to help the Dogo, then proven dogs need to be registered and bred. That is why people send me their dogs in the first place, to prove them and make sure they are breeding (and registering) proven dogs.

The reason a majority of the Dogos are number 2, is because people are registering and breeding Dogos that are number 2. So why not register and breed Dogos that are proven?

I myself have no desire to breed and make money, I breed because I want better dogs than everyone else ( like to laugh at other people's pot kickers jk). If I have a litter on my yard, none are leaving as 8 week old pups. Since I am striving for excellence, the dogs will be culled based on health first, then as they mature, looks will come into play. If they have faults, they will be culled, if I don't like their structure, weather it falls into the breed standard or not, they will be culled, then if they are not early starters (catching before six months) they will be culled, then once their teeth are set and they reach 9-10 mo old, they will really be sent through the ringer, and most will be culled... I will do it this way because I want the best and I want them to fall within the entire breed standard, including being able to find their own pig, and being good at it. Once I find which dogs are going to be "the best" and be breed worthy, the others (if there is anything left after the culling) will be givin to buddies of mine that will hunt the number 2 out of them and that I can easily keep track of... And yes, mine will be registered.

Take it from someone who has been there and done that. When I was younger, I got my first Dogo, and didnt register him because I didnt give a number 2 about papers, and really I still don't. I cared so little though, that I didnt even keep up with his puppy papers so that I could register him later. He was probably one of the best, if not the best, dog I ever owned. Since he wasn't registered, it limited my options on bitches, because fact of the mater is, people like registered dogs. People like to know where the dogs come from, blood lines ect ect. I bred that dog to one bitch and not breeding him more was one of the stupidest things I have ever done. I wish I would have bred him to a toy poodle, just to have more of his blood around. Now, although I'm lazy about it, I register my dogs. It's a great way to keep up with history and see what blood is really working, it also helps alot when your looking for another nice proven dog to breed to.

 The male I have now is very very nice, very proven, and registered, and I got people beating down my door to breed to him. He has covered two very nice proven bitches this year already, and covering a third when she comes in in the fall, and covering one of the bitches, that just had a litter, again on her next cycle. Not a single one of the pups are being sold, all being kept by me, the owners of the bitch, or being given to hunting homes of people we know and hunt with so we can go back and get the blood whenever we want, and all pups are being registered.

As much of an @$$ hole as I sound like, I'm just tryin to give some advice. A different perspective of "helpin" the Dogo. You can register the pups, just register them in your name. If someone thinks they have an excellent dog, come and see for yourself. If you think it's excellent too, let them breed it or you breed it and do your farm out system all over agian with a new generation of pups out of proven parents.

Just remember, not everyone is in it for the money.

In the beginning I was in it for the money whether I realized it or not. But I've really put a lot of thought into it and I would like to give some pups to people who hunt a lot and will push the Dogo to be a top notch hunting dog. I don't want any money for the pups. If they turn out to be good dogs I will make the same breeding and paper them. I do appreciate the advice you're giving me. I'm very young and I'm have a lot to learn.

That is the right thing to do Dodgegirl and I respect you for it.  Now if the Dogo became human aggressive I would have to put it down before I would let it go to a pet home.

Thanks, finally someone sees the good in this. I would certainly cull an aggressive Dogo no question asked. We rescued one once. Thought we could help her, but that was out of the question

Taylor, I don't know much about the Dogo standard, but wasn't Soco smaller than what the standard allows?

He was and that is an additional reason I didnt register him (which I still regret), I knew he was a runt when I got him. I'm not against breeding a Dogo that isn't within breed standard as far as  height/weight. You have to breed the best of what you have available when it comes to looks. I couldn't have asked for a better huntin dog than soco, but I just know, now that I have more available to me, I will be more strict when culling dogs on my yard. You have to start somewhere, and if I could just have socos for the rest of my life, I would be happy. But that isn't the case. When I did have soco, he was more of a necessity. like I said earlier, it's more of a passion now than anything. I am able to have more cur dogs and more catch dogs at this point in my life. For a while, it was just soco on my yard, then for another good while, it was just soco and lacy. I needed a Dogo, or a dog like a Dogo as far as how they are supposed to be hunting, to get the job done by myself.

I grew up bay and shoot and this whole catch dog thing was all new to me. Just happened to turn into my passion and hasn't cost me all this money that people are talkin about. The only expensive part about the Dogo for me has been proving them. Since I don't have 5 to run on the ground together, and I want to make sure they can get it done on their own, I have had some take some nasty blows when they are a long ways off. I dont hold my sogs back because they are an "investment". i hunt the number 2 out if them and send them theiugh the ringer to find out if the investment was good or not. But other than vet bills, nothing has been expensive, and it's been worth every penny. It's neat to know you have a dog that can do it all and do it all by themselves. I hope to put some dogs like this into other people's hands one day, and it not cost them an arm and a leg either, but no one will ever have the best off my yard, because I'm mainly breeding for myself.

Me and Brian are going to carry on socos blood, they are not registered, so they won't be culled for height weight. They are just being bred because they are bad ass hog dogs and they will be culled for poor conformation according to our standards, and culled if they dont make bad ass hog dogs. I'm going to just continue calling this line of dogs unicorns .

I find it kind of funny that you get onto me saying I'm not helping the breed. But you're breeding a Dogo who doesn't even meet the correct size. But to each there own. As long as your dog makes you happy at the end of the day that's all that matters.

What if some of the first ones you give away turn out to be the real deal? You wouldn't want them registered?

And you shouldn't feel TColt is "getting on you". He is just pointing some things out to you. And his Soco dog might have not met breed
standards but he WAS the real deal. Search back through past threads about him. You as a Dogo person will appreciate that dog.

Fixit, Yes, you can if you bother to keep the paper work needed to do it. I didnt even think to try and register the dog till he was four years old. Read earlier posts, I wasn't very  worried about paper work at the point in my life. Still ain't, but I think it does the breed justice if you produce jam up dogs and have the paperwork to prove what they are. Live and learn.

Dodgegirl. Didn't breed soco for Dogos, bred him for hog dogs. Actually never advertised him at stud what so ever, not that i would advertise any dog at stud, or even advertise puppies. I let my dogs performance speak for itself, and the rest takes care of itself. And Soco was bred to an AB, so they are just hog dogs with no pretty name to call them. They are still all white, and most would still refer to them as unicorns , like I said, I'm strictly breeding that line to keep socos hog dog blood goin. Breeding a female that shows all of his traits to another male Dogo... For more hog dogs, not for more Dogos.

When I say I'm not against breeding a dog that does not confirm exactly to the breed standard, I do mean it. If there is a dog that is an inch taller than breed standard, but is an excellent dog in all other aspects, they deserve to be bred. Form follows function, and just because a dog doesn't have the exact breed standard for looks, doesn't mean it is not excellently comfomed either. Breed for hunt, health, temperament, disposition, conformation (angulation, structure, not height weight), then start thinking about looks, but always breed the best dogs you can and don't settle for sub par on the function, the form will follow.

i live in florida and my family uses dogos. they make awesome catch dogs and great family dogs. but they have their problems being such a dominant breed. we had this one male we got shipped straight from argentina and after he reached his mature age he got very agressive and wanted to kill everything. we also had a female who did the same thing, she turned on her own daughter. on craigslists there's always dogos for around 500, but your not goin to be gettin great bloodlines.

What about this dog aggression issue, is this the dogs or line you will be breeding? Are "great bloodlines" dog aggressive with no hunt?

What happens when you send out these pups to people who don't know about this problem in this line of dogs.....and there is an accident and some of their good dogs are killed, or someone in the family is bitten.....

I see major problems that should not be reproduced.

wjat paperwork will I need? as it is I sold gyp(for personal reasons) and her paperwork went to buyer. still got male though and all his stuff..but kinda for same reasons I prop wont bother. gyp not proven as of late. and really I guess according to some other people my chuy will never be proven at my rate of hunting..but the experienced hunters who seen him hunt says hes good...
