Catchdog is insane!!

My catchdog Cobaine is by far the best dog I have and has more hunt then any dog Ive been around. Only bad thing is I had him on chains and he would get loose (pull out of the ground, break the snap, break the collar, ect!) and catch wind of the hog in my bay pen (400 yards in the woods away from the dogs) and catch and kill the hog I have, and sometimes eat some of it then come back and sit by his house like nothing happen (covered in blood!)
I thought I had it solved when I bought a 6x10 chain link kennel that's about 6'3" tall and has a tin roof. I had a salty (i mean real salty!!) 100 pound sow that I've been using on rough dogs to back them up and bay. BUT yesterday he must have caught the scent from her and managed to climb the corner some how and bent the tin roof back like a banana peel and squeezed out. Jump the baypen and killed the sow. Not strange enough... Well some how he climbed his crazy ars back on top of his kennel and the tin on the other side bend bent down inside the kennel where he fell inside on e again like nothing happened!!

I now have his hard headed but on a 5 1/2 foot logging chain inside the kennel. Praying that this is the end to CD hoodini lol

Has anyone else had dogs that catch wind of hogs and just get a wild hair?!

ya that's why i don't keep hogs by my dogs . sounds like hes got game!

sounds like a good one. make sure your chain aint long enough for him to climb and hange himself

The chain is much to short for him to hang himself. I learned the hard way about that last year 

I think this new set up will keep him locked up like he is suppossed to be. Just goes to show how smart this one really is.

I build my pens out of the 4" x 4" 20' long panels you can get 2 of them 20' long and 2 16' cattle panels putting the cattle panels on top& bottom use the 4x4 panel on sides & ends.  Tie them together real good and they will stand up without any support & they can't get their head threw the sides & bust welds.  They can't get out!

We had a few hogs in a horse tralior at my buds house and in the middle of the night he herd  pigs going off , when he got up he found his cd had chewed threw his chain link pen and made a hole , jumped up on the back of the horse tralior and climbed the metal slats to the top and bingo he was in , we looked at it in the day light and I would of bet money there was no way a dog could of done that

get a 20' tow chain, fix it to a cinder block, bury block 3' down in hole, attatch heavy duty swivel and two collars and hook swivel to both collars via two quick links or them rapelling clips like the old bulldog folks did. you should be good then.

This is not as heavy as I use on my big male bulldogs but the same idea...

I thought the same thing... If he pulls that chain up out of the ground or breaks the swivel and climbs out and that chain gets stuck on the way out he could hang himself or die from dehydration... Just a thought. Sounds like a better chain and anchor would work by itself a lot better than having to keep waisting money on kennels and getting them torn up.

I have my big dog the same way but instead of taking a chance with the clips I just have a shackle to the heavy duty swivel and another shakle from the swivel to the collar. Those clips can bend from your dog pulling

Do like Underdog and dont Skip on the swivels, dont try to save a few pennies and buy anything smaller/cheaper or you good dog will pay the price you will regret.

I get the heavy duty stuff from work so this won't be a problem. Wierd thing is he only does it when there is a hog in the pen in the back. For a cd he has an awesome nose on him. He acts normal as any other dog when the pen is empty. But I will be putting him back on a chain set up outside the kennel. I did like the kennel for him cuz he is solid white and the chain rubs his chest like any other dog but alot of solid white dogs have more sensitive skin the other dogs and he's one of them.

I dont think it takes a good nose to smell nasty hog, once starts living in a small area crapping and wallering, the wind swirling around even I can smell the hogs certain times of day. My dogs get wound tight when the hogs start making noise, and they do start calling and grunting during the night.

All that, AND, I can't stand when my dogs bark or misbehave at home. Just a different set of circumsisions, but I have actually put a hog IN an empty kennel before just for the purpose of teaching the stubborn ones that they don't get to do spit unless we are hunting. And no it didn't hurt none of them. At one time I had 14 dogs kenneled 30 feet from a whole pen full of boars sows and pigs for almost a year and they couldn't care less about those hogs but I was still catching truckloads of them from the woods at the time.

Got some pretty serious bulldogs, some of them weight pullers, and I've had them on chain set-ups for a few years. NEVER, ever, had one break off the chain. It's also important to use proper hardware for your set-ups, as well as check the hardware periodically for ware and replace as needed, as well as the chain itself. If a cold shut or o-ring or something rusts up real bad, it is possible that it can break, thus leading to a loose dog and possibly a yard accident of sorts. We personally use metal poles we get from Home Depot, about 10-12ft tall as our 'stake,' We make a hole about 4ft deep, stick the pole down in there, and throw about two bags of quick dry cement and we're good to go.

Had a dang d ring break on me one time so stated just using another coller and putting the collar in the swivle and doing away with the second quick connect or snap. Just do t skimp on the collar here I use the douple ply thick nylon ones works well.  I have tried a bunch of different ways from runs to this and that for chains and this is what works for me with strounger dogs
