Hunting spot is a good area. Lots of pigs....deer as well. Patrolled by Neighbors and Game Warden....they are serious about poachers boys. Anyway...this is the place we've had some nice Boar Hogs come up on a game cam.

Land owner called Blake and he got it set up...kind of a last minute decision. We met at the normal spot and transferred dogs....met the land owner and a couple of his buds on the property.

It was probably around an hour before sun down when we dropped the dogs. I brought Jasper, Preacher and CD Emmett. Blake brought Tater, Buck, Maddie and CD Stone. We left Tater in the truck on this first go round. The other dogs on the ground were more than capable of striking pigs and there have been Issues with Tater taking pigs off the land we had access to.

Anyhow... Headed out to first feeder...stopped at the top of a hill about 100-150 yards from it. Preacher pup bails off the hill with Jasper Right behind him....followed closely by Buck. Well, at the bottom of the hill Preacher pup and Jasper go right and Buck goes left. Preacher pup and Jasper stop and hang up around the feeder and Buck takes his track about 150 yards and opens up. Dogs go to him and we just get the feeling it's a good one. We close to 50 yards and can't see anything...to thick...so we unsnap. It sounded like the CD's missed. The hog broke and everyone in the party saw it but me....said it was a real good boar. The race went over a mile.... Buck was the last to come back. Looked like the pig hit a high fence/road and put on the after burners. Preacher pup got about a 2" skin cut on his left flank. Nothing serious but started me thinking he may end up a little gritty by the time he gets some good experience under his belt.

Well...we loaded back up and drove down to the bottoms to hit a few more feeders. It was a good looking area...and at each feeder the ground was ate up with hog sign. Problem was....Jasper has switched from hog hunting to skunk hunting. In the next hour he proceeded to strike 4 different skunks.

Ladies and Gentlemen this dog has NEVER trashed on a skunk....EVER. Before last weekend that is. Last weekend a young dog trashed on a skunk and Jasper was near by and ended up getting in on it. This weekend...FOUR! Moral of this short interjection....gotta be careful hunting young dogs with young dogs. Now...Jasper got what he deserved after his violations but I'm still worried about his next hunt....anyway...on with the story.

I was fed up and loaded Jasper and Preacher on the ATV. Time for plan B...."Operation Tater"

We went back to the truck...collared up Tater and dropped off Maddie. Blake asked if I was keeping both mine out...I told him yes... They needed to get on a hog after all that trashing. I would just keep them loaded up till Tater opened up.

As it turned out...it didn't take long. We hit the exact same feeder we hit at the beginning of the hunt. Tater started trail barking pretty much right at the feeder and came bayed about 75 yards away. Buck bailed and I dumped Jasper and Preacher. We were bayed solid in seconds. We got within 50 and unsnapped. Again a MISS!! Hog broke and went 450 or so...the CD's in hot pursuit. We knew EXACTLY where he was headed. A pond in that area.

We get there and yep...they are in the pond but can't stay caught. Hogs fighting the dogs and they are all going under and coming up...going under and coming up. The hog was NOT under control but it was a bad situation so I waded out about 15 yards and hit silt....sunk up to my knees....immobile. Had to hit my belly and crawl back. Blake tried and same thing. I started unraveling a rope lead I carry...trying to make a lasso. Hog never came close enough though. He was swimming around in circles dogs harassing him. Preacher was practically standing on the hogs back or head giving him an ear full. Don't know HOW he didn't get cut up. The CD's were swimming in...catching... Getting half drowned...letting go and coming back out. It was a mess.

Finally the boar got close enough to the far bank that one of the newbies was able to leg him and Blake dispatched him.

Boar hog somewhere near 200lbs. Teeth 1 1/4"

We went to counting dogs and had all but 1. Stone....Blake's CD was missing. Neither one of us had him on Garmin...just a question mark and last location...35 feet.

Blake lost Stone on this hunt. Just a crappy way to end a nite.

Tie a 50' rope on your cd before you send them into water. Allows you to reel them back in if needed.

Good thought... Will definitely carry rope from now on but the bay broke and went 450... CD's followed. Wouldn't have helped last nite.

No swimming here..about 3 foot of water over 3 foot of silt.

How many times you hunted together?  Huh? He's legged plenty of hogs with me.

Sad story to hear. Almost had the same thing happen to mine but right before I cut him loose I seen what they were in so I let the dogs finally push him back out the lake and they caught him without my catchdog

Sorry to hear about the dog Blake.

I started running a shock collar on my bulldogs a couple years ago after stroking one on a busted bay. Now if they get more than 100 yards, I'm pouring the juice to them... it works well.

Kevin, don't worry about the skunk deal. My 99.9% trash broke dog bayed the hell out of one a few weeks ago... and we sent the pups to him. Shocked That's why I never call one 100% trash broke. Grin

Yeah Mike...it was frustrating. Funny thing....the Land owner and Newbies called Hog on one of the strikes... The dogs were only like 50 yards away in the pasture about halfway between us and a feeder....they Said "there he is... There he his".....I couldn't see anything...Just barely make out the dogs....Think Blake said he saw a dark shadow...asked them "are you sure?" They were adamant... We were like, ok then....and unsnapped. Well...dead skunk of course....now ALL the dogs stunk... Not just the bay dogs... Lol.

Guess I'll go ahead and invest in a trash breaker too.

Learned a lesson....never trust a newby, lol.

Thanks guys. The life of a catch dog that doesn't return when a bay breaks. I agree, I am going to start running trash breaker on future CD's. The gamey one's don't like to stop....

In reference to Monty's comment: I haven't caught that many hogs with your dogs to have the chance to leg one. Every time we've caught a hog it was Dale's and Ronnie's dogs striking the hogs and me tripping over your puppy's on the way to the bay.....LOL

hunted a couple tourneys with lance and same thing happened, hogs bayed in a pond and ended up in the water, 1 was deeper than I could stand so I had to a lil doggy paddling and then got mired up to my knee on the last 1 and had to get lance to help me get unstuck. when its hot out its fun, but the first time was cold, especially the wheeler ride back.  Grin kevin, the hog in the first pic looks like he has a lot of Russian in him.
