not tryin to sound dumb but ive never hunted behind a hound but was wondering when they open up are they normally on a trail that is an hour or two old or are they on one that has just come through in the last few mins? im wondering this because im thinking of getting a plott. thanks for all help.

Hounds are generally open on track period. Some are colder nosed than others,usually the hotter the track the shorter the period of time between barks.Most will have a trail bark and a bay bark.I don,t know your hunting situation but unless you have alot of land to hunt i would really be selective about the hounds i would run.By that i men a hound that has alot of grit to him and can run or drift a track really fast or you will find that the hogs will run alot further before they stop and bay.I think the plott is a good choice because most of them are gritty and can push atrack fast.Hope this answers your question.

ya that helps ive always ran cur dogs that are closed so just wondered. mabee ill try a cross with plott instead of pure. the hogs we runn here dont stand around for a dog to find em they hear a dog and there not stoppin till there in the next county.lol

ive got a full blooded plott male that is completly silent until looking at a hog, he isn't that gritty but can stop a runner. i also have a 3/4 plott and 1/4 cur that will yelp when she picks the track up, then shuts up till looking at the hog. this same dog u can take coon hunting and she is completly open. but if there are hogs around u can forget the coons, but if no hogs, then coons better head out of town cuz she is coming for them. these are the only 2 hounds that i have hunted and i like both of them even though one is yelps and the other is silent

i have seen curr dogs open on track as well depends on the dog in my opinion. i hunt registered plotts and i have a couple 1/2 plott 1/2 currs i run but i can show u that not all hounds r open period.if u run a pup with open dogs there is a good chance it will learn that and vice versa

i told todd that some of you guys were interested in his plotts. He should be getting back with yall soon.
he's going to get 3 young dogs today and i think he wants to work the plott/cur gyp a little more before he gets rid of her.
he still has some other dogs for sale though..

setexasplott this is the question i addressed in the first part of my reply when i said hounds are generally open period.I said nothing about all hounds being open on track.Without knowing the dog there is know way to tell how old the track is when he barks.but when the man asks about a dog barkin on track I guess we would just have to assume he is an open hound wouldn't we. |
