I have a young bulldog I'm working with (apbt 11mon). He is a good natured dog, has a good handle and all the drive in the world. The issue I'm having is he doesn't go to the ear he always try's to catch top of head or on top of the neck. He has only seen about 10 hogs all in a controlled manor due to his age. Some in a pen or small hog (100 lbs +\-) in the woods that was caught with another bulldog. I have sent him behind the other bulldog and or released the hog and bayed it again and sent him in solo. My question is how can I get him geared more towards the ear? Is this an inexperienced thing that I can break? Does he need more time/hogs? He caught ear the first time and has not tried for the ear sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like he is trying to over power the hog instead of catching it. I would put him in a small pen or trailer with a much larger hog that won't play that and he will find out the ear is the best place to be

Yep, a little bigger rougher hog and he'll find the ear I bet.

The only thing I would add is keep in mind how young he is. Me personally I wouldn't rush to put him on anything too rough until he got a little more age on him as he is not even a year old yet. But once I felt like he was ready I would start putting him on bigger rougher pigs until he starts to figure out the ear is where he wants to be.

Good luck, I'm sure he will figure it out.

True that rednose I didn't notice the age really to me a bull dog won't come in to his own till bout 18 months that's when the iron is the hottest. That bout the age you can really see what you got imo he is at the age he can be used but not as the main cd he can learn a lot by hunting and watching

I agree with you and red nose judge. Just frist bulldog (apbt) that I've own that didn't go to the ear naturally or more consistent. I've seen larger catch dog breeds try the back of head and or neck, and change over to the ear. Just wasn't sure if there was more that I could do to help out.  Thanks again guys
