Me, JR (catchdog), his daughter Andrea and his buddy Jeremy loaded up some dogs and headed to one of their spots last night.  The land owner called the day before and said hogs knocked over his feeder and rolled it down a hill.  We turned out right after dark and walked for a little ways when the dogs started getting jumpy.  We watched my bmc and my hound get out on the gps and you could tell they were on the trail of one.  They got out about 500 yards and started hammering down.  We got there as quick as we could.  We led in JR's bulldog and one of his airedale crosses (which so far is straight catch) aboout 50 yards from the bay and let them go.
Now theres been a few posts about whether people carry a gun while hunting with dogs and I fully understand not trusting most people that are amped up with adrenaline to shoot towards your dogs but we also carry at least one gun for emergencies or worst case scenarios.  I just never really put alot of thought into what that might be.....
We got closer and we see my hound cut down and hes out of the fight.  Then Jeremy hollers that he doesnt have any ears and JR's airedale found that out the hard way when he tried to catch.  I hollered at Jeremy to shoot it and JR's bulldog was headed into the creek bed.  He tried to catch with nothing to grab and started getting hammered.  This hog was in total control.  Jeremy finally got a shot towards the middle of the hog away from any dogs.  This was enough to slow him down and He'll Do and the bullldog caught at the back of the hog.  JR jumped into the creek bed and shot him behind the ear and dropped him.  We ended up with 3 dogs, my two and JR's airedale, cut up pretty bad.  The vest the bulldog had on took a beating but he is ok.  We stapled up our dogs and I think theyre gonna be ok,  just gonna be out for a while.  This was by far the baddest hog I have been on so far but I am very proud of the dogs.

We guessed right at 300lbs.  My biggest so far.

Nice hog!! hope your dogs heal up fast. this might be a dumb question, but why would the hog not have any ears?? If someone cut them off and let him go, why would they do that???

Glad yall got that hog out of the woods Jarred. Thats the kind of hog i dont want to get on...
Those no eared hogs are tricky to catch, even the smaller ones....we have caught several of them, but lucky they have all been sows so far..... Is that Jeremy Westmoreland yall have been hunting with?

His ears looked like they had been ripped off.  I figure he's run into hog dogs before.  He stopped in a perfect spot for him to try and fight them off.

Yeah Trent it is Jeremy Westmoreland.

All of my dog got up this morning and walked around. Glad to see them doing well.  By the looks of his ears he's been like this for some time. If people do this for the hell of it I wish them the worst off luck with hog hunting.

I would hate to know someone did that on purpose.  That kind of stuff will come back and haunt you down the road.

Huntermand02 he is getting real big.  He is so solid its unreal.  We've been doing a lot of work teaching him to lead right.  I'm ready for him to be older.  Thanks again.

I have been in this situation one time before and I was glad I was carring a gun! I will not hunt without a gun if I am huntin my dogs. It is tough to watch your dogs gettin cut to heck and can't do anything about it! But I do not let other people carry a gun when I hunt my dogs unless I no them very well. Jet I  hope the dogs heal fast!

I much prefer to catch hogs, but I always try to carry a gun "just in case". My trouble is I usually only carry a .22 pistol. That worked for years, been the only gun I carried for probably 20 years and have shot and killed boar hogs over 220 lbs with it. But last Feb two of my dogs got on a bad boar hog, 2 miles from the truck and all I had was that .22 pistol. After having him wreck both my dogs, and having shot him 8 times, in the head, and him still standing, still cutting dogs and still wanting to fight, I was wishing I had more firepower.......

I will now always carry a gun, just for those few times you may need it.

Hope your dogs heal up quick.

Thanks lonewolf, I know exactly how you feel.  I hate seeing the dogs get cut up. I'm glad there was a gun there or we would have been in a bad spot.  But I wouldn't let just anyone shoot over my dogs.  Only people I trust.

Crackerc, If you were using hollow points that more than likely was the reason the bullets did not penatrate. Happened to me with the 22 mag and hollow points. Switched to solid jacketed and haven't had a problem since.

I had the bright idea once that I didn't need my knfe since I had my pistol. Caught a 225lb. boar in a lilly pad pond. Just me and the dogs. Gun jammed. Couldn't drown the hog. Decided to try and get the gun going and thankfully it came un-jammed. Dead hog. I always carry both now.
