Question about dogs that are straight catch

We recently got a reg. Catahoula female that is 5 years old. She hunts out great by herself. Regularly getting out 1000yds+ without any other dogs. The problem is, so far she hasn't barked a lick, straight catch. I've always had rough dogs but, damn. We haven't had her on a huge hog yet but definitely a couple of respectable size. My question is, would you just hunt her and hope for the best? I don't want her to get killed because she is .8 miles and caught on big nasty. But I don't want to feed something I can't hunt.

Use her as a stop dog when you get on a runner who will bay for just a minute and break b4 u can get there.

that sounds like my whole pack put a bay vest and cut collar  on her and send her hunting

Unless you got a really fast mule I don't see her lasting long. It's not always the one they got caught that kills em. And I haven't found any rear bumpers that fit my dogs. How do you know when they catch one 800 yds off with wind blowing? Heck something would be dead before I ever new to go to her.

my buddy has a cat that does that. no matter how big the hog. he uses him as a catchdog... or when we go to spots that have runners..send him in as a stopper. to stop the running.. and we will send in 2 more catch dogs to help holdem.. a  catch vest needs to be on... basically u got a rcd.

only hunt her with other dogs that will all catch , if 4 or so dogs catch a hog ,then they dnt get cut was easy ,

but if you deside to sell her let me know ,, i like dogs that catch

I was thinking the same thing sure could use a dog like that again to slow down a couple hogs around here

if your going to run rough dogs run a whole pack if you just run one it wont last long

id make her a help dog, somethin that you lead till the dogs strike out and then let her go and immediatly make your way to the bay with the cd cause shes gonna be caught

Help for a catch dog. I would not put her on the ground with good strike and bay dogs.

My point is, that sounds like my kind of dog... hunts out good and not afraid to try and shut one down... usually takes that type of dog one GOOD whippin' to figure out they can't catch everything....

... after that, if they survived it, you might just have yourself a hog dog...

Try and run a dog like that with any other dog and you'll just get it (and the dog you runnin' it with)killed.... keep runnin' her by herself... you might just have yourself somethin'....

How far do y'all think a dog in a vest can run in this weather? Plus it slows them down going through brush ,briars. If our catch dogs break the bay by making to much noise going in. They very seldom can catch up to one.I know a bunch will disagree and for each his own,But if this dog does start baying he will probably be too tight or want to bite a little this will cause one to relocate .

I agree on the vest point... all I'm sayin'  is if I was in the market to buy a dog... this is the dog I'd be looking for...

if u dnt want the dog to catch educate her! like stated above when this dog meets the righthog  that can whip it off the dog will bay! unless it has some bull dog some where in it. and i dnt think all straight catchdogs get killed, they simply have to learn to handle a hog. and as far as a dog that puts some teeth on relocatating a hog ? it also takes them teeth to stop some hogs and set up and bay. and some hogs need a tight bayen dog to hold just like some dogs need to be loose on some hogs. im not gonna say one type is better or a dog that is straight catch is gonna die, if they dog is a hog dog and produces pork it`s doen what has to do! but i do tend to like a rougher dog. i say collar the beast and hunt her thats what u got her for right?

I ran my dogs in vest all summer. As long as you can get them to water or pour some water in their vest youll be ok. I would use her as a help dog if she  doesnt bark though.

Noah, to answer your question, We havent had her but a couple months and she hasnt been cut yet. but she is 5 yrs old and she has some pretty good scars on her hide. One thing, that she has made it this long is encouraging. but i dont know how many hogs she has been on before we got her.

I think we will continue to hunt her until these other turd hounds start being more consistent then start hunting us a male to breed her to. I know she has not been hunted consistently before we got her and cant imagine how good she would be if she had. She may not reproduce any of it.....but she might

Ive got a reg Cat also same thing.  Ive been running him with a cut collar only.  I walk him like a CD but when i notice the dogs get opiggy or the first bark i turn him loose.  Ive noticed a big change in the last month or so with hogs running.  Ive got a unicorn following him also to back him up.  I'm loving those 2 dogs lately!

Maybe biscuit will start taking off with her they could probably make quite a duo once they get it all figured out.

I think we need to get her caught far out on a little/regular hog and let fatiuge / heat etc bring out the most likely scenario...a gritty cat. She will most likely learn, but possibly die... either way we wont wonder with her on the chain! Odds are with her
