i don't know about yall, but i like my pitt to lock on and me having to break him off.
i like a mental catch dog! when you bay big fat toothy, and have to go in there without any trees around, you better have a lot of faith in your CD.
i don't want a softy.

I have never owned a catch dog you had to break off a hog. After I stick the hog, just tell them "dead hog", then "load up", and they head back to the truck.... IF thats what your talking about.

I agree with you Stoked, I want a cd that you have to break off. If you get on a 300lb boar with good cutters, I want my cd to hold tight no matter how many hands are on that hog until we get it tied! Makes our jab a little safer.

Y'all don't think that because a catch dog has a handle that it won't catch a hog or it's a "softy".
It's all in the training you want to put into one.

I'll have to agree with Mike. I will say that this might be a little harder to accomplish with the full blooded pits.

Ill stick with a catch dog that has to be broken off.
That being said though, Lamar Smith has a Colby bred Pit that he has trained in personal protection and uses as a catch dog. Tap that dog on the end of his nose twice and tell it to release..... and he does. That is the only true hold to the death catch dog that I have ever seen who will also release on comand. Granted, I have not seen them all, or even many, but any other "release on comand catch dogs" have been half ass catch dogs at best.
I'm sure that any of them could be trained like Lamar's if you put that much time into them but I'm not going to spend that kind of time on a catch dog.

We have two, one AB and one full blooded pit. Once you get the hog legged tell them caught hog and they will set off to the side and waTCH

I hunt with a guy that who has a dang good CD that will release on voice command and two light taps on the forehead. That is his only CD so he gets a lot of work and has an incredible handle.

Ya, we have a catch dog, Jag, who will release when you tell him to. He hits hard and holds strong and im confident to be behind him. you may have to tell him a couple times "out", but he will come off.

Its not necessarily the dog that decides to let go of a caught hog but is more the amount and type of training. We always have tried to get all of our dogs obey voice commands.

Agree....old hunting partner had a hard catching pit that would release on command. My current catch dog will not release but will come back to me after a broke bay.

My fear about a cd that releases on comand is that someone will say a word that sounds like your comand for release right about the same time your grabbing for a big hog. I know a guy who was proud of his horse because no matter what the guy was doing, when he said Whoa... that horse would come to a skreetching halt. One day we were running wide open across a field after a cow and he said something that sounded like whoa and his horse put the brakes on and sent him flying over the horses head. Just something to think about.

I'm not talking about one that will let go in the heat of the battle... i'm talking about one that can be called off after the hog is under control. There's a big difference there. Then you can load the hog, whether tied or dead, and that same dog will ride out on top of it. That impresses the hell out of me and I would love to own one. I don't mind breaking or choking a dog off... but I can't stand ill-mannered bulldogs, before and after the catch.

YEA YOUR RIGHT THATS VERY IMPRESSIVE, IF THATS THE CASE AND THEY KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SITUATIONS THEN THATS THE WAY TO GO, WISH THERE WERE MORE PITS LIKE THAT, BUT MOST ARE JUST MAINLY HARD HEADED.

Just something to think about. Its not really like that at all. When the hog is under control or dead and the dog is coming back to reality, all it takes is a firm voice command and two taps on the forehead and he lets go. When in the heat of the battle there's not a word that can be spoken that can get this dog to let go.
