It's been so hot and dry here that we stayed in this weekend.
We did get a good soaking a bit ago though and looks like more is on the way! Thats good thing since I thought Burnet county was about to become the new Sahara desert.

We have 4 children that like to help name the dogs but usually I get stuck with the final decision.
Trapper < Lacy Ellie Girl < Lacy Hidie < Lacy (Secrets sister) Secret < Lacy (passed away) Ox < Lacy Jagd < Lacy Ginger<Lacy Biscuit< Lacy Jilly Bean< Lacy Sunny Shine <Lacy pup Buffalo Girl aka Buffy the hog slayer < Lacy pup Maya < Boston Carver catch dog Diva < Catch dog hog nose pit Jersey < My Aussie Xaila <Siberian (other daughters dog) Suki < Lacy x plott (daughters dog) Yuki < Lacy mix rescue (daughters dog) Sahara < Lacy x plott (daughters dog)
I named Hidie & Secret those name so I could refer to them as Hide & Seek Named a RED Lacy Blue once..since there were so dang many blue lacy dogs named blue..

I am all for the catch dogs! The best of strike/bay dogs will try to hold a big boar but it usually takes a good catch dog to get the job done.
We have had our best catch dog get knocked off one time. The boar was big & mad...but not near as mad and sulky as the catch dog got ! I think she is still ticked off at that boar !

Just getting them out with you and letting them see that it's ok for them to wander away from you. We start ours as pups in a pen then move up to a 50 acre pen but one of the big things is letting them know they can run off...instead of staying under your feet. I don't want to refer to it as taking them for a walk because that brings up images of a park and leash.. but it is a walk in the woods to let them discover their roll in the hunt.
Once they figure out thats what you want from them(to get out and work) then instinct kicks in and the hunt begins.

We have actually run into that a few times on one of our places. A sounder of hogs up in the middle of a herd of cows at night . Our older dogs know to go in and push the pigs out and leave the cattle alone...our younger dogs haven't had to deal with it yet .

I have heard the term "over hunted" in regards to properties many times before...I`m curios, how long you figure it takes before the hogs think the coast is clear and come back or another sounder set up residence ?
When you have a place ,do you hunt the heck out of it, or rotate it out with your other places? And just how "dog savvy" do you think hogs get?
I know opinions & experiences will vary, at least I hope they do or else I`m not going to learn anything new...but I have noticed the answer tends to be different based on different parts of the state/country
