Any dog off of the Texas prison system would be a cull, they have never caught an escaped prisoner since the state quit allowing trustees to lay trails back over 10 years ago, they just dont get confirmed catches any more, there have been 3 escapes next to the ranch I own next to the max unit down here, none were trailed despite the fact that they spend thousands every year on a bunch of crossbred mongrels, the real tracking dogs are owned and trained by the federal pen system and the FBI, not the state of Texas, I am almost postive they have not found a escapee in 15 years with there dogs, they can not use prisoners to lay trails so what are they doing??? lol Were you next to a state or fed pen??

If you got a dog from a FBI proven mantrailing stock or from a Fed Pen maybe, the state crosses up everyhting and anthing and does not breed proven man catchers to proven man catchers, biggest joke in the prison system is the way they breed and train!!

I believe we have a dog sergeant or two on here who would beg to differ with you Mr. Knight. With all due respect sir, the hounds of TDCJ can still runnem down and makem poo their pampers. Im not personally involved in those dogs but I know a guy who knows a guy. I guess its second hand information, but I trust the warden who I know.

I preach in the Tucker State prison up here in Arkansas. Got to know some guys up there. They cross the hounds cause the blood hound has too thick of skin and its so hot. So I think the cross is a blood / walker cross. Anyways, they told me that when they have a litter that they start to train them at about 4 months old. Once they start trailing with the other dogs and one of them trashes on anything other than a human scent then they cull em. Said they will find em good homes. Ive had them offered to me but dotn run hounds. Always wanted to try one. Thought it would be cool just to have a dogs from the infamous Tucker Prison farm! Dont know how they can cull after a pup starts trashing cause I figure you have to train them not to trash but the trainer must knwo what hes doing.

There is some prison blood in our dogs.. The dog Seargent here in Huntsville is kin to hog hunters and a hog hunter himself & has been crossing in the coldest nosed, best all around hounds for a while now with cur dogs. I couldn't tell you specific dogs that were bred but I know it's happened in the past. These arent no mongrels either as knight describes his.. Old, old stock working hounds

Anybody with a uniform and warm body can be a dog sgt, its just like the horses the state has, they have to buy giant strong backs to support the overweights they have to hire, I watch them all the time, there idea of training hounds is to haul them in a state trailer up and down the hiway barking so people who dont know anything think they are training, its is a discrace all i can say, we got 3 prisons down here where i live, one joins us, they have never caught anybody yet and prob never will, think about the idea of somebody trying to track prisoners on horseback at night??? A horse can not go thru fences, they dont have fence jumping mules, tracking collars or anything i have ever seen down here, the dogs are just trade day hounds, if you have the resources post up how many escapes there have been in the last 20 years and how many catches have there been, they have not caught anybody down here yet since they opened, when the law changed to where they can not use inmates for laying trails it went downhill, the old time man trackers used to have 2 escapes a day with live trustees, one got caught by the dogs and a trail lawyer sued the state of texas and won a huge judgement of millions for him, after that the rules changed, of course they dont use the guards for escapees either so what do they do to train them?? I will not let them on any ranch i have a interest on, its a big joke nowdays to those who know better, I had them call me at 3 am in the morning and tell me they had a escappe under the camphouse, drove up and it was a armadillo, they train on abandoned buildings is about all i see, they let the hounds loose and if some dog barks its a prisoner!! Real escaped prisonner runs in fed pens and for the fbi and in some other states use a live person in jailhouse clothes, why is this, because the prison or jail washes all of the inmates clothes in the same machine with same soap, they are trained to detect the soap/clothing smell as if there is a break there is not enuff time to figure out who is missing for a scent article, those who cant train on live inmates anymore suffer and thus the dogs dont get any real runs until somebody escapes by then its too late, look into it, ask them why they breed dogs who have never found an break out to each other?? The Feds and FBI to dont breed anything that has not had finds and proven in tracking test they have, in Texas if it barks its a prisoner doglol KInda like some hog dogs in the classifedslol Repetition is how you train mantrackers, if you can use men to track whats the point of having the dogs?? Its like President Regan said, I am here from the gov to help you find your prisonerlol They ought to offer a $50,000 reward for escappes found by outside dogs and they would not get away because some hog hunter would keep and train up some dogs instead of the handicapted state guards,,,

The State prison in Florida close to my house, has beagles. The prison allows there dog handlers to be "borrowed" by other law enforcement agencies. They practice man tracking every week in the State Forest management areas.
One of the local Game Wardens has a beagle he uses to back-track deer hunters to their tree stands and corn piles (illegal to bait in Management areas). I talked to two guys that gave me a first hand account of this dogs tracking ability. One said "it was worth the fine to see a good dog work".
I don't have any facts about the dogs, but they practice alot, and I never heard anything negative.
